Forgiving Ourselves

Forgiving Ourselves

One of the few things more damaging than not forgiving ourselves is believing that there is nothing to be forgiven for.

“To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against him.”

~Daniel 9:9

  1. Another brilliant remark from one remarkable writer. Thank you, Mitch. It helped top buoy my morning.

  2. Forgiving ourselves is part of the protocols in 12-Step programs re alcohol and drug addiction and the accompanying misdeeds. I have not been able to do that even though I don’t think I did anything so horrible . But those little things stemming from being unkind and dismissive certainly hurt others. I don’t ask God for forgiveness. If that’s going to happen , it will happen without my efforts as God’s forgiveness is by grace alone. However, since getting clean and staying clean since 2002 , I have tried to live so I would not need to worry about it. Oh, the past ? At least I do cut myself a little slack because I did not know how to live in harmony. I do confess my sins in prayer and express regret but I’ll leave forgiveness up to God.

  3. Having read the quote by C.S. Lewis, I’ll find it easier to forgive myself. I never looked at forgiveness from that prospective. Thanks, Mitch.

  4. That C.S. Lewis was one smart and insightful man! I’ve read his children’s books, but not his works on theology. But I must! I will forgive myself for now.

Three very powerful quotes there, Mitch.

  6. An infamous past president once made it clear that he had nothing to be forgiven for, although he claimed to be a Christian. Dangerous attitudinal stance indeed, not only for himself but for the entire nation, too. 🤔

  7. Amen times three

  8. Outstanding! 👍🏻😊

We can be such foolish creatures sometimes, gravitating to one pole or the other of forgiveness–the pole of self-flagellation, refusing to forgive ourselves, and the pole of pride, thinking we have nothing to forgive. Thank you for these quotes, Mitch, that help us gain a proper perspective!

  14. Lewis always knew how to get at the heart of the matter and voice it so well. Thank you for sharing this quote.

  15. This is a great perspective!

Brilliant. About a month ago I posted something similar. I hope you do not mind that I have since added your quote by Lewis. Thanks https://rhfoerger.wordpress.com/2023/09/22/when-you-become-wise/
