This is probably
the only haiku poem
I will ever write
No, it’s not, I lied
plus, I’m breaking a rule–I’m
ending on a rhyme
First line has five syl-
lables, then seven more, and
then five more. Boom. Done.
Haikus are supposed
to paint word pictures. Not this
one–it’s defective
“Haiku” sort of sounds
like “thank you” with your mouth full
I just noticed that
Haiku!
You’re welcome.

Hahahahaha: “Thank you with your mouth full” Hahahahahaha!
Does poem have 2 syllables? I’m not sure.
It does. At least in Canada it does. 🙂
Thank you for exploring this poetic tradition. You said it with more tact than I ever could have.
Thanks for giving me a laugh today, Mitch. We will be on a hiatus for the next 10 days or so, but we will catch up with you when we get back.
Enjoy your hiatus, Kellye.
Thank you, Mitch!
Thank you most kindly
I’m exceedingly grateful
Haikus rule OK!
Haiku! You are welcome
*bows*
Nicely done
Very creative!
Thank you!
Oh, dear . . .
I like Japanese food,…. especially the grilled shrimp…. with that yummy rice and sauce. Hiku.
I’ve heard it a little differently …
“Haiku!”
“Gesundheit.”
;>)
Knew it was something to do with syllables and lines but looked it up in case I had it wrong. Actually an interesting and ancient Japanese art form. Thought this might be of interest. http://www.britannica.com/art/haiku
Among haiku poets themselves it is understood that the Japanese word unit actually bears no relationship to the English syllable and that the count, though forming an interesting major subsidiary of thought, is not required to create good haiku. You’re welcome! 🤣
Thank you for the info. Might I get a link to the information so I might update my knowledge base? Thanks in advance!
We’ll, I learned it from Ty Hadman, my mentor in youth. You can look up his works. Powerful. We’ll deserve their international reputation.
Haiku’s not an exactly viral subject, and here in America the pernickety syllable counters are far more vocal than their peaceful synthesis-oriented counterparts.
However, if you wish, someone at the Association will probably be glad to discuss the subject with you in a balanced way.
https://www.writebetterpoems.com/articles/how-to-write-haiku says either works, must include insight. Simple answer and updated data base. Thanks.
Good finding, and thanks for share ng the resource.
If you wish to delve deeper, there is much deeper to delve.
There is, for instance, more than one school of thought regarding emotional content.
There are traditionalists who insist upon a seasonal reference by which the reader may orient him or herself in nature.
And there are extreme traditionalists who work within a set of references so profound that in Japan a fresh guide is released each year, one thousand pages long, in diamond type and quarto volume ~ simply updating these correspondences.
Happy studying!
Thanks. I just wanted to know where the info was coming from. Haven’t heard of them much since school…can’t remember what grade. Nice to know they have updated stuff.
👌
What a fascinating poetry form – something I’ve never been particularly good at, yet admire in others.
Well Mitch, you have written one more haiku than I ever have, but I’m not sure if my poetic colleagues in the Society of Women Writers will emulate your approach 🙂
;>)
As a lifetime charter member of the American Haiku Association and a past invitational reader with them at the National Poetry Convention, it’s a real shame that your ladies won’t, I call it.
PS, Mitch, actually, remembering that small but very exclusive gathering, I can see your works going over very well. I could introduce you… “I’d like to introduce, now, a poet new to our ranks. He has only written four haiku in his life (a tiny but significant part, of course, of a much greater oeuvre) ~ but I believe you will agree with me that they do indeed stand alone… Mitch? Come on, don’t be shy…” And then you’d get up there all humble with a little smile and PUT A LITTLE JUICE IN THEIR DRY, DRY DAY! Haha, introduced correctly, they’d LOVE you for it! 😊😂🤣🤧
I was counting with my fingers and you nailed it. Haiku!
haiku humor
Haikumor?
That’s it
Mitch, Mitch, Mitch. Haven’t you DONE ENOUGH, HERE???? 😊😂🤣🤧
Haiku! Gesundheit!
That’s hysterical, Mitch. Once we went on vacation and I left all my writing behind, determined to free my mind. Well, I found myself writing haikus all week. 5 7 5s over and over. It was fun. As I recall…I think. You are funny! So clever 😉
Aw, thanks, Deborah.
Mitch, your Haiku is a rollercoaster of humor and surprise! I couldn’t help but chuckle at the twist and rhyme. It’s a reminder that poetry can be playful and rule-breaking, yet still leave a lasting impression. Thanks for sharing this, it brightened my day! 😄📝
Delighted to hear that, Hira.
One of my favorite bands, Fisher, has a song called “Haiku”, but I’ve never bothered to sit down and determine if there’s actually any haiku in the lyrics …
I like it, James! There’s an infectious sweetness to it.
Thanks for the haiku
It gave me a laugh or two
Finish my two?
The ball’s in your court.
For years, most poems haven’t rhymed. Song lyrics, which to me are a form of poetry, almost always rhyme (or contain near-rhymes). Maybe lyricists will move away from rhyming one day
Or perhaps poets will reinstate it as one among the preferred forms. Rhyming metric poetry intrinsically stimulates the moral sensibilities, and I wish to see it brought back ~ and vigorously!
Fun!
Haha! You are quite gifted!! It’s late and I’m not that clever to try my hand, but I love this!
Peach
Aw, thank you, Peach–and good to hear from you!
