Some years back, I wrote a four-scene Modern Day Christmas Experience that’s performed by churches and drama groups every year. Here’s a brief version of one of these, The Shepherds. Merry Christmas!
The moment Dan and Trish Shepherd dragged their kids into Whoopee’s Diner, the three smallest, “the meemies,” began running amuck. Like always.
“Hey!” Mom shouted. Like always.
“No grass till the sheep get in their pen!” offered Dad.
The meemies dove into their chairs, giggling and ‘bah’-ing.
“Who wants a hamburger?”
“Me! Me! Me!”
“How long till we get to Grandma’s house,” groaned middle-schooler Nikki.
“Honey, don’t whine,” said Mom.
“I’m not,” Nikki whined, “and I refuse to sit with the meemies—they’re all sticky and gross!”
“Come on, Picky Nikki,” offered big brother Colin, “you can sit with me.”
“I hate it when you call me that!” Nikki dragged herself tragically to his table.
“Dan, tell the meemies a story!” Mom ordered.
“OK. Who wants a Christmas story?”
“Me! Me! Me!”
“So, there was this kid who really wanted an air rifle…”
“You can do better than that,” a woman interrupted. “Hi, I’m Miss Angell, the Night Manager.”
“Here at Whoopee’s?”
“Think bigger, Dan, lots bigger. So, who’s up for a miracle?”
“Me! Me! Me!”
“Is that the special?”
“About as special as it gets. So, it was nighttime, and the Shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks…”
The meemies dropped to the floor and began “grazing.” Loudly.
“Quietly,” Angell added. The meemies instantly turned silent.
Mom pulled out her wallet. “I’ll give you a million dollars if you tell me how you did that!”
“…when an angel appeared.” Angell touched Colin’s game box. Several hundred hearts appeared on the screen.
“Whoa!” ‘Eternal life points?’ Where did those come from?”
“I know the Designer.” Angell touched Colin’s chest. He jerked back, as if awakened from a dream, and said, “Dad, I don’t know what I want to be, and it’s freaking me out.”
Dan gasped, put his hand on the teenager’s shoulder, and replied, “I know, son. We’ll talk.”
Angell turned to Nikki. “And you. No more fear, sweetie. You’re not alone. God loves you so much he’s going to live right here from now on.” She touched Nikki’s heart.
A smile spread like daybreak over Nikki’s face as she rested her head on her mom’s shoulder. Trish stifled a sob.
“Listen, Shepherds, this very day the Savior is born in your hearts, and you’ll never be the same again. The miracle that happened 2,000 years ago is still happening, and when you look for Jesus, you’ll find him, right here.” She touched Dan’s chest.
“Holy—!” Dan shouted.
“Dan!” Trish reacted.
“No, I mean that literally!”
Angell went on, “Right now your faith is a baby, just like Jesus was. But if you love him and live your life for him, that faith will grow, and you’ll soon realize everything that really matters is about him. Now, go and tell the world! Oh, and avoid the Whoopee’s Combo.” Suddenly she was gone.
And too excited to eat, the Shepherds hurried off…
To tell the world.

Thanks for sharing this, Mitch … Next year share it earlier, so we can show it to our church youth department. 😉👍
Thanks, Anonymous.
Annie-nymous. My phone did it again. (*eye roll*) It would seem I have a choice between being identified and having more emojis to choose from. Like *eye roll*.
