What Is Love?

Valentine’s Day has a rep for being shallow, a sales gimmick for the greeting card and candy companies. And it can be that–if we let it. On the other hand, it can be a day for celebrating something bigger and more important than mere infatuation–if we let it. After all, it’s something we innately sense is bigger than us, that existed before us, and may even be the reason there is an us. The movie Interstellar intriguingly implies that love is the ultimate unified field, the force that holds the entire universe together. But then we’ve known that all along, haven’t we?

Love is Perpetual MotionFrom the novelization of the movie Healing River

and climbed the topmost steeple,

but God declared, “Go down again—

I dwell among the people.”

“You don’t love someone because they’re perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they’re not.” ~Jodi Picoult

“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.” ~Ursula K. Le Guin

“The great tragedy of life is not that men perish, but that they cease to love.” ~W. Somerset Maugham

“Have enough courage to trust love one more time and always one more time.” ~Maya Angelou

“Love is how you stay alive, even after you are gone.” ~Mitch Albom

“Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.” ~Charles M. Schulz

“And what would humans be without love? ‘RARE,’ said Death.”      ~Terry Pratchett

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.” ~J.R.R. Tolkien

Once, during a difficult and confusing part of my journey, I sought God for an answer to my question, “What is the most important teaching of the New Testament?” After reading the N.T. three times, God showed me that it was LOVE. It changed my life. Blessings Mitch!

Beautiful! Thank you for reminding us that we are not captive to Hallmark’s definition of love. The quote about going back down the mountain is especially timely for today since it is Transfiguration Sunday! But you already knew that, didn’t you.
    Blessings.
