Some years back, I wrote a four-scene Modern Day Christmas Experience that’s performed by churches and drama groups every year. Here’s a brief version of one of these, The Wisemans. Merry Christmas!
Middleton Mall had seen better days. But the annual Festival of Trees still brought people in. “Well, that was nice,” said Colleen Wiseman, willing it to be true.
“Seriously?” her daughter Talia replied. “We should’ve just bought online.”
“What’s up, elf-girl?” said dad Bill Wiseman. “When did you suddenly go all moody-broody teenager on us?”
“The mall’s not what I love about Christmas, Dad. We’re missing something. Can’t you feel it? I know it’s a stupid time to blow up, but I’ve been keeping this inside for so long…”
Colleen touched her daughter’s hair. “I’ve been feeling it too, sweetie. We’ll talk about it when we get home, OK?”
“So,” Bill pressed on, “we meet back here at nine. Have wish-lists, will buy!”
“A little less fake holiday cheer, honey,” his wife advised.
“I know, Col. Oh, hey, were you going to buy something for that carpenter who’s redoing our cabinets?”
“Joe? Yeah. Did you know his wife just had a baby?”
“Really?” Talia erupted. “You guys, this is crazy, but I had a dream about them last night, and in the dream I knew about the baby! And Joe’s wife looked right at me and said she had something really important to tell us!”
“Funny, they actually invited us over tonight,” said Colleen. “Did I tell you? They’re so young and they have almost nothing, but Joe said they wanted to give us something!”
The Wisemans stared at one another for a moment, and then raced off.
Two hours later, Colleen entered with a huge box and plopped it down, her face transformed. Then her daughter entered, carrying a bulging bag. “You look like the cat that ate the canary.”
“Oh, Mom, it’s a mobile! It’s got a star and angels and—”
“Would that be for your seventeen-year-old brother or your forty-six-year-old dad?”
“For the baby, silly!”
Bill entered, lugging a huge box. “What? It’s a stroller–they’re going to need one!” He glanced at Colleen’s box.
“It’s a crib. I make no excuses!”
“We have to take these to them now!” Talia shouted.
“But how? They live way out at the edge of town.”
“I remember their address!” said Bill. “It’s a miracle! I mean, I only heard it once and I remember it–I think. Anyway, our Chevy’s got On-Star and it’ll lead us right to them!” As the Wisemans forged ahead, the mall’s loudspeakers swelled with the strains of…
“We Three Kings.”

Mitch – this is great in a million ways!
Aw, thank you, Mary!

Wonderful! Where can I fid the rest? Merriest Christmas, Mitch. ❤️🙏
I’m posting another one Saturday, but not the remaining two. The complete program, with all four playscripts and notes on how to present them is here: https://skitguys.com/scripts/a-modern-day-christmas-experience
And a Merriest Christmas to you, Gail!
Thanks, Mitch. I’d like to pass them on to the Youth Pastor at our church. Do we need to get copyright clearance or anything?
Performance rights are included with the script purchase.

A wonderful story about the true meaning and purpose for celebrating our Saviors birth!
Thank you, Peggy.
Fantastic! What a truly great piece of writing.
Thank you so much, Daniel.
I am very selective regarding people I want to spend my time reading, simply because there are never enough hours. I find you have joined that shortlist. I wish I were as gifted as you are at writing.
I’m honored to be on that shortlist, Daniel, and consider you to be a gifted writer as well.
Mitch,
Love it. Great twist. We won’t mention the two year gap because the message is still the same.
Merry Christmas,
Gary
