My feature film Healing River was released on Amazon Prime a week and a half ago, and so far it has been rated a perfect 5 out of 5 by viewers! (They’ve also written wonderful reviews). The producers and I are thrilled, but not completely surprised. After all, it played to cheers at sneak previews and has received over 20 festival awards, nominations and selections. We couldn’t be happier. However…
The Trolls aren’t happy (the internet kind, not the cuddly kind). Or then again, maybe they are. As soon as the influential IMDb (Internet Movie Database) began accepting ratings, before anyone who’d actually seen it got there, trolls began rating the film a 1 out 10 points, the lowest possible score, actually ranking it below the worst movies ever made, movies like The Room, Plan 9 From Outer Space, and (interestingly) Troll 2, infamous flops made by befuddled amateurs who had no clue what they were doing (our cast and crew are seasoned, award-winning professionals). But that’s not the point.
The trolls haven’t actually seen Healing River! In fact, according to IMDb data, almost half of the ultra-low ratings are from from countries where the movie hasn’t even been released! But then trolls attack just for the sake of attacking. Why? According to internet psychologists, there isn’t a why. Trolls attack anything people care about (they’re known for mocking families of mass shooting victims). They take pleasure in hurting anything perceived as good (the term troll derives from the Old Norse word for “demon”).
Help us drive away the trolls! Watch Healing River at Amazon, rate it (and write a brief review), then go to IMDb (you’ll need an account, but it’s quick and free). Then look for the star next to the movie’s title and rate it according to how you honestly felt about it. If you’ve already seen Healing River, head straight for IMDb now! P.S. Rate a few other movies while you’re there (IMDb devalues ratings by people who only rate one film.)

That is so frustrating Mitch! A Christian book I recently reviewed (about women in the church) is having a similar issue with amazon reviews. A group of folks who dislike what the book is about is getting people to leave 1 star reviews, even though they have not read the book. So unfair and not very Christian like either!!

I can’t understand the thought process behind anyone doing anything like that to any kind of film, without first seeing it. Film making is so challenging, every film make deserves some degree of respect and their films should receive a fair hearing rather than a rating from someone who has not even seen the film. This is just terrible.

Been there, done that, and you have my sympathies. rest assured that anyone worth their salt understands that there are dark forces at work which automatically post hate; they can and will just be filtered out. Best of luck with the film, I’ll look out for it.

I am so very sorry that this is happening to you. I have to admit I started watching it and I had to stop because it brought out so many powerful emotions and I wasn’t in the place to handle them. I will watch the entire movie and leave an honest review………I could already tell it was very moving.

Yes, I am in Singapore. I could through a friend living in N America. She watched it and I watched through her laptop screen same time but different time zone I had to sync. Why do people do that?
It’s complicated, but I think troll’s motives are a mix of desire for attention, sadism (pleasure in causing hurt), other things, and possibly a surrender to something far more insidious than those, evil.
🙁 I don’t really understand it… just makes me sad.
My own guess is that attention seeking and sadism are indeed the main motivations of trolls who are not being paid for trolling, and that nobody is paying your trolls. BTW, isn’t sadism evil?

Hi Mitch. I can get IMBD on my Fire TV and have marked this one to watch later. I like trolls but at the moment am tied up making face masks for the people around me. Next time I take a breather I will definitely watch. I always give good reviews unless it’s one I really, really hate, but always give the reason if I hate it. So far in my lifetime I’ve only given 2 bad reviews on items I’ve received from my pharmacy (their impossible to navigate website and incompetent or missing pharmacists) and the power chair with the wheels that stand out from the chassis and make me trip each time I go near it. Really, someone in need of a power chair that is intent on committing murder when she goes near it. So far a broken leg is the worst, but I can see the trolls — or maybe my poltergeist, laughing at me each time I go near it. Wish me luck on this. I have to go out tomorrow and it’s sitting there leering at me.
