Falling Into My Pit of Pain

I have a high pain threshold. Hence, I barely notice small injuries. As I type this, I’m glancing down at a scab on my arm that’s bled several times. And yet I never even noticed the incident that caused it. Which sounds kind of nice. But I’m not the movie hero Novocaine. Low-thresholders are forced to learn how to cope with pain. But us high-thresholders tend to fall apart when we experience real pain. And thus it was a fortnight ago, that I’ll fell into…

My Pit of Pain. It started, said Dr. Nick, when my cold virus hung around too long. Result? My distracted defense system allowed an evil horde of Joy-Destroying Bacteria to launch an all-out invasion. By week two, they’d completely conquered Upper Lunglandia. True, I had non-stop body ache and a nose that forgot how to nose. But my lungs were the center of the attack. And the real pain—the unbearable pain—was in my back. Each time I coughed, it felt as though it was being struck with a sledgehammer by Conan the Barbarian. I made it through the days.

But the nights, oh, the nights! Each night, I’d cry out in agony a hundred times before the sun arose. Sleep was nowhere to be found. My wife, who did her best to sleep between screams (and never became infected), finally insisted I get help.

So I did. Last Saturday, I was given the meds that would in time drive out the bacterial horde. But what about the pain? After two more nights of sleepless screaming, I put on my whiny puppy voice and called the clinic. Dr. Nick was off today, said Nurse Coldheart. I whined louder. She said she’d “look into it.” Which, I figured, was nurse-ish for “go away, puppy.” But thirty minutes later, the pharmacy called with a prescription for a pain reliever and a muscle relaxant—one that makes you (i.e. me) drowsy.

Last night I slept. For the first time in a week. Nearly pain free. And today, the ground is littered with bacterial truncheons and broadswords. I finally feel like me again. Invincible Mitch is back, folks! And Pitiful Mitch? Never heard of the guy.

So, you can expect My Real Memoir to finally resume in this space next week, with nary a sign of my former…

Pit of Pain.

  3. Praying for your complete return to health, Mitch! (While I can’t eat solids and am heading to a CT scan this week, just in time for our “kids” to arrive from 4 hours north for Easter. I should work on trying to make this funner, or funnier, whichever. . . )

LOL, I’ve written a few posts about the “high pain tolerance” folks. Suffice it to say, “stop that!” It is not a pass or fail test. You nailed the wisdom to be found here, “Low-thresholders are forced to learn how to cope with pain.” Exactly! True of all forms of pain, physical, mental, spiritual. Pain is a messenger. 🙂

  25. Real pain and then looking back at it to be humorous with a pinch of tragedy. Glad you’re out of it for now.

  27. Pure Glory says:

Mitch, glad you got relief from the pain and finally got some rest.

  28. Muito bom dia prá você!
    Sempre recebendo as bênçãos universais!
São abundantes, permanentes e são pra todos!!!

  29. lisakunk says:

I’m glad you’re doing better. A while back I coughed for a month and when I was starting to get better, I found out that pineapple juice with turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and honey was my new best friend. Next time maybe.

  30. Mam Win says:

That sounded terrible. Glad you are doing better and the awful pain is gone.

  31. There were some nasty viruses and complications from viruses going around this spring. I’m relieved to hear you’re feeling better and are ready to roll-or should I say rock and roll? 🙂

  32. Boy, can I relate! When I broke my arm at the age of four, the doctor told my mother I had a high threshold of pain. Twenty years later, when I was pregnant with our first, she was afraid I wouldn’t know when I was in labor. (I knew.)

    Glad you’re feeling better!

  33. Ann Coleman says:

I’m so sorry you were sick and in such pain! Thank goodness you’re feeling better now, and I’m hoping you can enjoy a pain and illness free Easter!

I reeeally feel your pain! Just getting over a one-week cold! Thankfully, no covid, strep or rsv but it’s been a real pit🤧😫‼️

  36. AS someone who suffers from chronic arthritic pain and spends many sleepless nights, you have my sympathy.

  37. laluzdeana says:

A pesar de todos tus males, que de verdad siento, he de decirte que.
    YOU ARE A GENIOUS!!!.
En medio de tu dolor, has conseguido hacerme reír con Conan el Bárbaro 😂😂😂
    Gracias y mejórate pronto

  38. Glad you’re feeling better, Mitch! Not getting sleep makes everything worse. 😊

  39. Bronlima says:

    Welcome back!

  40. Chaya Sheela says:

I am glad that you are feeling like you again. This post resonates with me. As a part of my treatment, I had to see a physical therapist in January for excruciating pain due to a tendon tear. When I told her I had a high pain threshold, she said having a high pain threshold can be good and bad. It is good that you can bear the pain. And bad because instead of seeking help early to cure the cause of the pain, you let it get worse until it is unbearable and suffer more. I suppose she has a point.
    Take care, Mitch.

    😂

We are so much tougher when we’re not the ones going through it.

    Thoroughly enjoyable as always.
    Blessings

  42. I would definitely be in a pit of pain after squeezing through an opening like that. (Is that Toomes from “The X-Files”? If not, he reminds me of that liver-eating contortionist.) Glad you are feeling better!
