Thought for the Week
My wife and I often keep watch over our little house at night, typically she from midnight to three and I from three to six. Thanks to us, all evil marauders steer clear. And, oh yes, so does sleep.
“How do people go to sleep? I’m afraid I’ve lost the knack.” ~Dorothy Parker
“What delicious abandon in the sleep of the child. Where do we lose it?” ~Frank Herbert
“I’m not an insomniac. It’s just that my mind is in the best position to catch the weight of all hovering possibilities the moment I lie down.” ~Joyce Rachelle
“It is a special kind of homelessness to be evicted from your dreams.” ~Karen Russell
“Sleep is like a cat: It only comes to you if you ignore it.” ~Gillian Flynn
“There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.” ~Mindy Kaling
“The night is the hardest time to be alive and 4 a.m. knows all my secrets.” ~Poppy Z. Brite
“I won’t sleep if that’s what it takes to not wake up as myself” ~Casey Renee Kiser
“I’ve always envied people who sleep easily. Their brains must be cleaner, the floorboards of the skull well swept, all the little monsters closed up in a steamer trunk at the foot of the bed.” ~David Benioff
“Peace while asleep is no great accomplishment. But peace while awake for hours at night? That takes a clean conscience, a thing that can only be acquired through hours of daylight scrubbing.” ~Mitch Teemley
“Go in the direction of where your peace is coming from.” ~C. JoyBell C.
My mouth praises you with joyful lips
when I think of you on my bed
and meditate on you in the watches of the night.
For you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
~Psalm 63:5-7

LOL! When I was young I couldn’t understand why adults couldn’t sleep through the night. Oh, I understand now!
Flynn’s comment is spot on. And true, a psalm is better than a melatonin.
The demons come out at night, so I drink to their departure, which comes at first light, around 5:30 am these days, and only then does sleep dare come through the bedroom door…. Coffee at noon.
Aha. One good thing about living with fibromyalgia. Nothing hurts when I’m sleeping, and I’m terrific at sleeping (at night, even naps during the day). hmmm
I so relate to this.
You know of course the best sleeping pill is the Bible. That’s the weapon the enemy will use to make you rest easy! And if not, your time is well invested!!
Jesus was big on taking naps. Of course, he didn’t have a television or a smartphone.
But this is just another way that we’re encouraged to be like Jesus. 🙂

Aha, so you were the mysterious “Anonymous” once again, Joe!
if you drew the maranatha characters
You’re right, he did, Rudy! Joe Yakovetic is a great artist!
have you found the verses & dollar bills
I love your own personal quote and the insomnia jeopardy, so funny! I enjoy falling back to sleep about 100 times a night, which is to say, I have no clue what a good night’s sleep means either.
I know just what you mean, Gilda.
Mitch,
Oh for sweet sleep but the make the most of daytime hours. I am not always good about it.
Thanks, Gary
I like your quote!
Thank you, Pamela!
I love your ‘screenplay’ column in insomnia bingo! Hilarious! 😎
No credit due me, Victoria. I found this jpg online. Although I do very much relate to the “Screenplay” column.
Are you sure it’s not yours??? It looked very “Mitch-y” to me! 🥰 I think I can see you counting sheep/screenplay ideas in your quest for slumber.

“Peace while asleep is no great accomplishment. But peace while awake for hours at night? That takes a clean conscience, a thing that can only be acquired through hours of daylight scrubbing.” ~Mitch Teemley…very nice 👍!
Thank you, Janice!
And the unforgettable words of my freshman political science prof, the first day of class: “Governments exist because we have to sleep at night.”
At last! We have discovered the secret to your epic creative productivity! No time wasted on sleeping.
;>)
Your post kept me wide awake!
;>) Yep, that’s me, Geoff, literary caffeine.
Such truth in the quotes, Mitch. Sleep is precious to me these days.
Excellent, Mitch
Thanks, John.
Hmm, how did you know I had insomnia last night??
Lucky guess?
You’re absolutely right about the daylight scrubbing! 🙂
I would be a jeopardy champion if these were the categories lol. I am a man of the Nights Watch indeed. Nice to know I have company. 👏
Sometimes I mentally craft my writing, and sometimes I plan lessons. Great post, Mitch. God bless!
Thanks, Nancy!
I envy my cats. Cats never have insomnia.
;>) You made me curious, BoB, so I looked it up, and it appears cats actually can have insomnia. Imagine only being able to sleep 10 or 11 hours a day.
Ha! I guess I should have said that none of the cats we’ve had (and we’ve had LOTS of them — our kids were all experts at rescuing strays and bringing them home) had ever had insomnia. 🙂
Sorry, that was supposed to be “has ever had insomnia.”

Ahh! Yes, I understand you and your wife! This would be why my blog posts are often posted between midnight and 1am! 😉
Wonderful quotes!
Oh sleep…💤 Sometimes this verse is on repeat in my head.
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Psalms 4:8 NIV
Good idea, Kelley.
Thanks for the reminder I’m not alone. I have no problem going to sleep. My head hits that pillow I’m gone but those bouts of insomnia, the waking in the wee small hours ..🤯😱It can last a few nights, days months then as suddenly as it comes it stops! I’m insomnia free at the moment 🥳
Glad at least to hear that you’re enjoying a good stretch, Eagle (sorry, after all this time I don’t seem to know your name).
It’s Nicola 😊
Got it, thanks, Nicola.
you left off verse 9 & does psalms has a chapter 88
Why do you say I left off verse 9, Rudy?
you quoted verse 7, & does psalms has a chapter 88?
I had no problem sleeping before I read this. Now… I have too much to think about. This bodes ill…
Just kidding. Happy Tuesday. Sweet dreams to all and to all a good night.
;>) And a Happy Tuesday to you, AJ.
For years, I have referred to 3:00 as the ‘witching’ hour. I can’t figure why that is the time I always come wide awake. Things that I can’t think of during the day suddenly come clear.
Few things are more frustrating than not being able to sleep. And to make matters worse, when we’re awake in the middle of the night, it’s all too easy to worry about every little thing! I wake up in the morning and think, “why did I think that was so impotant?”
Oh, yeah. Been there too many times to count, Ann.
does psalms has chapter 88
