Truly I Tell You…

A learned Theologian passed away.

At that same moment, a Child died.

In the blink of an eye, the two appeared before God.

The Theologian wrinkled his nose and said,

“Hmm, you’re not what I expected.”

But the Child threw open her arms and cried, “Daddy!”

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

~Matthew 18:3

  1. Well, I’m resisting growing up, so my arms are wide open. Great message, Mitch! 🙂

  2. jayargonaut says:

    Amen Mitch✌️

  3. Bingo! As an elementary school admin, I see this child-like faith almost daily. Big people can learn a lot from our little friends.

  4. Ab says:

Children so pure and innocent and are the ones that’ll truly inherit the kingdom. 🙏

    • C.A. Post says:

Hmm, not because they are pure and innocent; they are NOT! But because they trust His grace activated by their faith is why they will inherit the Kingdom.😉

  5. Willie Torres Jr. says:

    Amen 🙏🤗❤

  6. Pure Glory says:

    Yes, and amen!

  7. Gail Perry says:

  8. And then God said, Honey, could you spend a little time teaching him to read from the heart? And she said, Sure.

  9. And then God said, Honey, could you spend some time teaching how to read from the heart? And she said, Sure.

(This is the second time I made this comment…sorry…WordPress is getting weirder and weirder)

  10. Rocky says:

So true. As our pastor said this morning, it’s not intellect, it’s about intimacy

  11. Wonderful message!

  12. LOVE IT!!! 🫶🏻‼️

  13. Badfinger (Max) says:

    It’sa great analogy.
Off topic Mitch…I know you are a fan or you wouldn’t have made a parody… have you seen Godzilla Minus One? Personally I think it’s the best Godzilla movie since the first one.

  14. C.A. Post says:

Hmm, I wonder if it was the same Being the child hugged that the theologian met; perhaps that was why “he wasn’t what he expected.?”😉. Know what I mean?👿

  15. Maren says:

I so resonate with the truth about the child and children, and I am guessing that I might have agreed more if the contrast were a pastor (possibly because I am one and am fond of ideas and ‘truths’ I discovered long ago) but the theologians I have known, particularly the ones who teach and are challenged every year by seminary students, seem to be always learning and growing, admitting mistakes of the past, seeking new clarity. I have come to an age of having seen the passing of many who taught me at Union (in NY) who I am sure met God and exclaimed “how very darkly I saw in my glass and how blessed I am to see your face!”

    • mitchteemley says:

Good point, Maren. This parable, of course, isn’t meant to disparage theologians–I’ve know many who are passionate lovers of God–but any individual who, in their pride, worships the god of their own creation.

  16. “Hmm, you’re not what I expected.” – So he probably shouldn’t be there? 😉
