The Lives of Trees

Of all the flora upon the earth, none seem quite so human as trees. Endlessly varied, not only by species, but individually, they strive to find nourishment, to grow and produce offspring. They struggle to weather the storms of life, and yet when they sense their time has come, they surrender to the earth. They are persistent and steadfast, yet patient and peaceful. Perhaps that’s why they live so much longer than we do.

“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” ~Khalil Gibran

“Listen to the trees as they sway in the wind…and their roots give names to all things. Their language has been lost. But not the gestures.” ~Vera Nazarian

“Of all the trees we could’ve hit, we had to get one that hits back.” ~J.K. Rowling

“Real love ought to be more like a tree and less like a flower.” ~Mya Robarts

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast

~Alfred Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see

A billboard lovely as a tree

Indeed, unless the billboards fall

I’ll never see a tree at all

~Ogden Nash

“An orange tree would rather die than produce lemons, whereas instead of dying the average person would rather be someone they are not.” ~Mokokoma Mokhonoana

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” ~John Muir

“Blessed are those who do not walk in the ways of the wicked or sit in the seat of the mockers, but who instead delight in the law of the LORD and meditate upon it day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water,  yielding their fruit in season,       and their fruit does not wither.”

~Psalm 1:1-3

I love trees, Mitch. I often wonder about some around where I live, they must be hundreds of years old. If only they could speak. Great photographs.

  2. Kim Smyth says:

I loved this post and looked at every tree, they are truly amazing!

  3. theburningheart says:

Great pictures, and quotes, on trees! 🙂

  4. boromax says:

Tree-mendous collection! Some of these photos are truly astonishing, and potentially startling if one would happen upon them unexpectedly. Thank you for sharing these.

  6. Oh, I love trees! Except the leaf raking part. 😉

Going through this lovely slide show was almost as good as a walk in the forest. ❤❤

What an astonishing variety of stunning trees. Along with so many, I love trees. Their strength
and beauty and as your photos show, even fun.

Interestingly after drought or times of stress trees produce an abundant crop of seeds as if they know their days may be numbered and they need to pass on their life to the next generation.

  9. Lyn Douglas says:

Trees!!! Where would we be without them. Judi Dench did an absolutely fabulous documentary about trees.

  10. Wm. Allen says:

    Absolutely excellent

This was posted earlier by one of my favorite bloggers. It is an amazing meditation on the magic of trees.

I didn’t realise how many trees I have never heard of – or how weird, they could have come from another planet. I love the gravestone trees, but now many people are dispensing with the gravestone and going straight to woodland burial sites!

  13. Woww. Great pictures and really amazing quote

  14. Oh, that Ogden Nash. He was such a wag. The tree photos you found are incredible!

  15. carhicks says:

Wow, amazing photos. I love trees as well, they are so majestic.

  16. This post has so much to be thankful for. The thoughts of the Masters are held for eternity by that of a tree holding the respect of those of the future. Great post as always.

  17. Eliza says:

I love the blossoms best, but that roller coaster tree…. just, just wow.
It’s awesome seeing how awesome nature, the world we live in, is.
    Love, light, and glitter

‘Tis great to see appreciation for trees’ beauties & the essence each possess. They’re some of my favorite beings. : ) One thing I am certain to do in travels of any distance is notice particularly odd & beautiful trees. I get a little angry when people cut down/murder perfectly healthy ones with no apparent reason, such as their growing into power lines or pipes. Someone had a fabulous tree cut down where I once lived for aesthetic reasons…well, it looks awful & barren there now. It was a perfect mushroom shape with neat visible roots. I planted moss & a fern there to accentuate it. My wildlife friends appreciated it as well. I’m not a tree hugger type, but – wait… I actually did hug that tree when I moved : )

  19. Good thoughts.

  20. Won’t even try to choose favorites among the great images.  Among the quotes, I love the eloquent brevity of Gibran and Robarts as well as the tart humor of Nash.

The introductory paragraph (which can stand alongside the quotes!) resonates with my own take on the persistent spirit of trees:

            *Wisdom in Wood #1*
                    Singing silent songs
                    of injury and healing,
                    trees refuse to quit.

            *Wisdom in Wood #2*
                    Never die?
                    No, the choice is to
                    never quit.

I love this, Mitch. Thank you!

  23. genienakano says:
