Our Masterpiece

I love the fact that the sky is always changing, never exactly the same, sometimes subtly different, sometimes breathtakingly so. Last night the moon was a shimmering crescent cradled by a perfectly-formed diamond of zelkova branches. It was one of the loveliest, most magical works of art I’ve ever seen.

And then it struck me: “No one else on earth has ever seen this masterpiece, or ever will. It was made just now, just for me.” I tried to capture it with my phone, but digital light sensors can’t sense magic. It was as if God were saying, “No, this is only for you.”

A short time later, as I reached to turn off my nightstand light, I looked down at my wife’s beautiful, peaceful face, framed perfectly by soft folds of bedcovers. And I thought, “No one else on earth has ever seen this masterpiece, either. It too was made just for me.”

As of yesterday, Trudy and I have been married thirty-six years. And I’m continually grateful for the ever-changing sky that is our marriage. No one else has ever lived the life we have together, and no one else ever will. It’s a constantly changing masterpiece…

Made just for us.

This made me realize that in order for someone to see the beauty we see they need our eyes. The sky is the same for everyone, but it looks different to everyone. And Happy Anniversary.

Most of the world gives hardly a glance at the glorious pictures that God is continually painting. Sometimes I’ll see a sunset, or a colorful bird or a forest in the Fall and I’ll actually say, “Father, you made that and it’s beautiful. Thank you.”
