Both of my kids were unexpected gifts. Nevertheless, when my first child arrived I fell instantly in love with her.
So much so that I was afraid I could never love another child as much. I needn’t have worried. When my second child arrived I fell so in love with her that I was afraid it would eclipse my love for the first.
Instead, my love doubled. That’s love’s curious economy: the more we love, the more we have to give.
Years later, my mom told me that I too had been an unexpected gift and that my dad had reacted precisely the same way.
“Ah, yes,” I thought. “Love is like that.”

Precious.
And when our children are adults they have half our DNA. How could you have a closer adult friend. When I told my daughter. ” You are the only woman I will ever understand, she said, “You’re probably right.”
Congratulations to you for being the kind of dad she wants to be friends with now 👏👏
Thank you.

When our sons were born, my husband was surprised by how much he loved his children from the beginning. Love takes hold of us, thankfully.

Beautiful! My wife’s reaction was the same — when her second daughter was on the way, she was afraid there would be no more love available. But oh! how wrong she was! Love has no limits!
So true, Frank.

No movies in the pipeline currently, Gary. We’ll see. Thanks, my friend.
You bet. Keep up the writing.
Love always expands to include everyone……and thank goodness for that!
My father shares such a strong bond with my siblings and me that we often tell him he was born to be a dad. We nearly lost him last year, so father’s day this year took on a whole new meaning.
Your post is so endearing. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Isha, and glad your father is still with you.
