My Featured blogger this week is Kathleen Jennette of Tales From My Lens. Both gifted and skilled, Kathleen uses her faithful Canon camera to capture what others overlook. Her macro images are particularly striking.

Squash.
That is not pronounced with an R.
There is no R in the word squash.
A little pet peeve of mine is to hear that ‘R’ in the word Squash.
I may not do the commas, semi colons or such very well when writing, but I do know how to pronounce the word squash.
Here are a couple of photos of the Zucchini Squash and its flowers which finally gave out a nice sized bounty just because it was supposed to do just that.

Til next time,
Kathleen Jennette

Ah, this person is a charmer with her lens. Love this so much. Wish I could follow her, but I guess too…well not good enough with the punctuation…🤣
After the Attack of the Killer Zucchini last year, I’m giving them a wide berth.
?!
A bit of hyperbole about the explosion of zucchini we had last year and the resulting attempts to use it all.
That ‘R’ in there is probably regional and not intentional. My mother was native Californian but would say ‘warsh cloth’, and I did too, until I heard myself one day and consciously stopped it, it sounded so wrong. Then I remembered my grandpa had said the “R’ like that, I think he was from the midwest
Washington, not Warshington, Do the Wash, not the Warsh. Gosh, not Gawrsh, Macintosh not Macintarsh, and galoshes, not galarshes. All the “rs” in Boston moved to the Midwest and got incorporated so they would not be lost for eternity.
;>)
But those Rs still fondly remember what it was like when they lived in Barston.
Where we are wicked smaht!
My mother came from Illinois but moved to the Boston area after marrying my father. As a kid, I spoke with her extra R-s (as well as the standard R-s that get lost there). I also pronounced “aunt” exactly like “ant” and was hassled by my father’s sisters for that.
Never did say “Aunt” it was always ANT. For some reason, “Aunt” or “Auntie” sounds pretentious. And when I tried to say “Auntie” I had a picture of an old lady with a funny hat and a flowery dress, and she smelled like baby powder, and I had no “ants” like that.
Sounds like we have a story somewhere in there!
Verrry insightful
;>)
Everyone knows there is no R in squash, but I know there was an R in wash when I was a kid, which my kids have tried to convince me that there is NOT. And creek was a crick,,and I think still is! 😂😁🤣
Lovely. To see the world in a
grain of sand…
So funny! Most of my family members put in the extra “R”s. My sister pronounces “wash” as “worsh.” Not only does she add an “R,” she changes the “a” to an “o.”
I guess some folks should warsh their mouths out with soap when they insist on putting in those Rs.
I think I’ll just call a zucchini a zucchini and a yellow squash/squarsh a banana and not trip up on the “rs.” Anyway, Kathleen has taken some awesome portraits of them! 🙂
Mitch,
I get it. Many veggies and words get extra letter or elongated pronunciation. Eh-dee-oss paa-na,
Gary
My Dad was from San Francisco and when he would say, “Venus, Can you warsh the dishes?”. I would respond, “No, but I will Wash them”. Lol
;>) Nice to know your name, btw, Venus.
P.S. If you add a link to your Gravitar page, I’ll be able to visit your blog more easily.
Amen! A pox on the renegade “R” I say! Take it on a long drive off a short pier.
