Is Meekness a Weakness … or a Strength?

Meekness is indeed considered a weakness in the modern world. Which is sad, because the original definition of the word meek is “patient and humble.” And those are two qualities our world is in desperate need of! (If that’s OK with the rest of you.)

  1. I pray for patience and humility every single day. If that makes me weak, then so be it (if that’s OK with you). 😉

I think meek is those who are unable to protect themselves not weakness in the sense of cowardness.

  3. I couldn’t agree more. We need much more grace and meekness and less of the bluster we see most days. I think of this anytime I see groups of people. I especially think of it when I watch sports and see grown adults primping and preening. I always wonder how they would react to John Wooden’s folksy advice about the team being more important than the talents or accomplishments of one man/woman. Great post Mitch.

  4. Debi Walter says:

So true Mitch. A favorite book of mine is a classic, Humilty, by Andrew Murray. I try to read it yearly because I need the reminder to pursue humility.

  5. ibarynt says:

I would like to practice more meekness in my life. The world can think what it wants but I know what is good for me.

  6. c.f. leach says:

Meekness is a sign of strength. Love the post my friend. Blessings and Peace!

  7. If it’s OK with Jesus, it’s OK with me.

  8. Antique Works says:

In desperate need in deed Mitch. You won’t get any push back on that from me.
There’s a lot of hurting people out there that desperately need Jesus to heal them so that they can practice being humble and patients.

If you don’t have it you can’t practice it.

  9. Todd R says:

Like faith depends on what you have faith in, meekness depends on who you’re meek towards

  10. Anonymous says:

YES! We need more meekness in the world! And we need it NOW!

  11. Ana Daksina says:

I had to stop and meditate on this one for a while, and end by offering a small but perhaps significant adjustment:

There’s a difference between authentic humility, or meekness, and false self-effacement. The first is God motivated, and the second by nothing more nor less than base social fear. Our panda, it seemed to me, started with the first, and allowed it to devalue into the second.

  12. mickmar21 says:

One of my sayings to people is, “Don’t mistake kindness for weakness”

  13. Great thought-provoking message and meme, Mitch. 🙂

  14. I agree, we need more of patient and humble. A lot more. The picture on top was funny.

  15. clcouch123 says:

Thanks for the message–and the poster. I tend to think that what I refer to as modestry (for humility) and restraint would go far to keep the work in check and maybe turn it in good ways. I wonder what will happen when the pandas take over?

  16. pcviii03 says:

I’ve heard it put, “meekness is strength under control”

  17. RasmaSandra says:

I pray twice a day once in the morning and once before bed, Both times I ask the Lord to give me strength, health, and endurance to get through each and every day.

  18. I’ve heard meekness described as “power under control.” I like that description.

  19. Caroll says:

What if all our Leaders were truly “patient and humble”? What a wonderful world we would be living in! Meek rules!

Such a thoughtful reflection on the significance of meekness in today’s society! How can we promote a better understanding of the true essence of meekness in our interactions with others?
