Saint Augustine of Hippo
Strangers In a Strange Land
Were we made for another world? Abraham felt that way. And Moses named his son Gershom, “foreigner,” because he said, “I have been a stranger in a strange land” (Exodus 2:22). Have you ever felt a sense of incompleteness, a longing for something beyond your earthly reach? Many people have. I have. Even as a child, it seems, I longed for another world. And I finally found out why.
“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”
~C.S. Lewis

Abraham and Augustine and Mitch are often saving our marbles. 🌷

I’m ready for the other world I was made for. Thank you Jesus.
I love this Lewis quote. Thanks for reminding me.
My privilege, Frank.
Reasonable Lewis. And encouraging. So is Augustine. So are you.

Yes! Amen.
This world is not my home…
A good post.
I’m sure C.S. Lewis made a few good quotes on this subject too. Thanks for posting.
He did indeed, Tom. It was at the very core of his faith and theological views, and mine as well.
“There is a book which no one has ever read. When I get to read it, every chapter is better than the one before.” C.S. Lewis
I love that quote. It often explains me.

C.S. Lewis’s nonfiction books are not easy to grasp all at once. But quotes cited separately, like this one, give me a Eureka moment. Thanks, Mitch. 🙂
My privilege, Nancy.
Me too, Mitch, like a fish out of water. I wonder if that’s what words like the Portuguese “saudade” and the Welsh “hiraeth” intimate.
I think so, Dora, along with the German word “sensucht.” Each has a sense of transcendent longing.
I think that desire in the very simplest way is why i love to read Lewis and Tolkien’s fantasy and science fiction. It reminds me to have an adventure in this life with people or places I do not know at all
I think it’s the reason why, when I read Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia”, I have this underlying wish that it was a real place and thay just maybe I might be able to visit there someday and be able to talk to Aslan face to face. I know we will see Jesus face to face when we get to heaven, so it isn’t all that much of a wish as it is a desire for it to happen now rather than later. Love the quotes, Mitch.
