Art uniquely reflects our conflicting attraction to and fear of illusions. It strives to reconcile our dueling convictions that, on the one hand, only what we perceive is real; and that, on the other, what we perceive is nothing more than the most realistic of illusions. If that’s so, wouldn’t it be nice if we at least got to choose our illusions? But it doesn’t seem to work that way. Instead, its seems, our illusions choose us.
