I Love Binge-Watching Spring!

Deersquirrel

Spring has sprung! Not that that affects my daily routine. I’m a writer, so my income remains the same: $0 (oh, the joys of writing on spec). And I still commute from my bedroom to the same place of employment: my studio across the hall. My work wardrobe has changed a little: I’ve gone from hoodie, slippers and sweatpants to t-shirt, slippers and sweatpants.

Outside, on the other hand, everything has changed! It’s a beautiful brawl of color and critters. In fact, the best spring show isn’t on Netflix or Amazon Prime, it’s “on” my office window:

  • Buds burst like popcorn, then redenbacher their way down between viridescent blades
  • Tiny peaches appear where minutes ago there were Barbie-tinted blossoms
  • Squirrels, hopped-up on hormones, chase each other from tree to tree
  • Rabbits silflay dandelions like pasta, and hop seductively over one another (note to self: try this with wife)
  • Birds make suggestive remarks (“I just relined my nest — wanna check it out?”)
  • Deer show up with speckled miniature versions of themselves! I love watching them out my office window–and pounding on it when they nibble my rose bushes with soft thorn-proof snouts.

I know, I know, I need to get back to theoretically making a living. But I can’t help it. I love…

Well, at least it gave you plenty to write about! I’m an avid Spring-Watcher too.

  2. I’m always so jealous when I read something like this, because, here in South Florida, it feels, in some ways, like fall. Yes, there’s been a sudden burst of the late spring bloomers, the royal poincianas and frangipani, but I know that they’re the last before the crushing heat. I need to wait until late fall for the return of the growing season.

  3. Mitch, this post was a delightful reminder that the best shows don’t always stream—they bloom. Your analogy of spring as a binge-worthy series made me chuckle and nod in agreement. I’m extremely blessed to be living on a property that my wife has basically turned into a botanical garden, so let’s just say I’ve got front row seats to the whole season. Thanks for the gentle nudge to keep watching.

    Very nice!

  5. It must be spring. A hawk landed by our backyard fountain, took a drink and eyed us a hello. The bird actually stayed there for a minute while Kristine and I stood behind a window near our kitchen table. We were just a few feet away. Wow. That’s a first after 30 years in our home.

  6. Loving your pithy verbs and other muscular words!

It just occurred to me: you are indeed “making a living” watching spring unfold. Bravo!

And I understand this, because the view from my 5th floor bedroom window while I’m at my desk, is the thing of dreams. I love it! I also love window-gazing during the winter months as well.

Yes, me too! If i can i binge listen too. I can’t believe how noisy the birds are !

  11. There’s a spring in nature. There’s a spring in pen. Art crafted what nature showed. Now there’s an added charm — the magic of words. Also a blessing bestowed by nature upon a few. Beautiful write!

  12. I like how you phrased the activity — yes, binge watching spring is fantastic! The bright colors are welcome after the chilly gray of winter 🌞

I know, right! I love it too. And I also love the experience of adding new words like “silflay” to my vocabulary. Thanks for that one.
But let’s not forget… In the middle of all this jubilation over the tumescence of the season, comes the heartbreak of lawn mowing. Signed; Debbie Downer.

  19. I wish everyone binge watched nature in nature Mitch! I wish everyone would just sit in the sunshine and let their eyes behold all the wonder – surely it would be restorative

  20. Binge-watching spring-what a great idea! The grass and the leaves have been enriched to a glorious shade of green by the spring rain-lots of it!!! 🙂

  24. “I know, I need to get back to theoretically making a living.” You get me thinking. Can I use that as an excuse. Um, I meant to get that project done … but spring happened! Check in with me in a few weeks. I’ll be all “springed out” by then! 🤣🤣😎

  27. The most glorious time of the year.

  28. “Binge-watching spring” is a great expression.

  29. #hood says:

    cora where are you?

  30. Hi Mitch,

Quick questions. 19,000 blog subscribers is impressive. Are most of them organic? Do you advertise your blog on Google or any other medium besides unpaid social media?

    • Jeff Cann says:

Hi David, don’t believe all the numbers you see on wordpress. I can’t speak for Mitch, but I have 8,000 subscribers, and I estimate that 80% of them are fake. I get about 120 new subscribers a month and they all have obviously manufactured names like cabinetryeyelash2486E43. I’m not sure what the point of these fake registrations are, but a couple of years ago, I just started ignoring them (except that they help fuel my general dissatisfaction with wordpress as a blogging platform).

    • mitchteemley says:

Hi David. No, I don’t advertise, but I do visit other bloggers with similar interests. Quite a few visit me back, and some of them subscribe.

  31. Great blog! I love spring, wild animals – and all of God’s awesome creation. God bless you.

  32. yes! love watching all those little critters as well right up until they craw, hop, walk into my veggie beds and eat those tender shoots right to the ground.

    • mitchteemley says:

I completely understand. I covered all the remaining peaches on my tree with netting today after I found half of them on the ground with bites out of them.

  33. Nancy Ruegg says:

It’s such fun to watch the greening of the landscape, see the various flower-varieties take their turn to dazzle, and hear the birds out-perform one another. But few can describe Spring as delightfully as you, Mitch!

  34. Ann Coleman says:

I also love watching the animals in Spring. And the birds, too! We’re getting so much more variety at our bird-feeder now.

  35. Jennie says:

    I love this!

  36. Love your phrasing, binge watching spring! I’m all in! In my neck of the woods, the mountain laurels are blooming, pileated woodpeckers are thumping trees, and deer roam the forest. Great pic too!
