I chose to write this true story about my aunt in first person in order to retain the impact it had on me.
I was never sure if he loved me. At first he liked my sister. I don’t know why. I mean, Dolores was pretty in a tomboy way, but I was the real girl with my flamey hair and legs all the way to China. I guess it’s ’cause she was fun, and I was always sayin’, “No! It’ll mess up my hair!” But the minute I seen Larry, I loved him. He was tall and skinny, but with cute bulgy little muscles. He was so vain, every time we’d go by a mirror, I’d check my make-up and he’d check his muscles. Hah!
First, he come around hoping Dolores would break up with Bill. Idiot! But then we start talkin’ and something just clicks, and pretty soon me and Larry are an item. I was so nuts about him that when we finally tied the knot all I wanted to do was sign that paper and drag him off to my cave!
We left the reception in a convertible he borrowed from his boss, and we had this bottle of champagne—I know we shouldn’ta brought it, but we did. And we’re laughing, and Larry’s glowing, and I’m thinking, “That’s ‘cause a’ me. I make my man glow!” And we’re goin’ down that highway in the middle-a-nowhere, and I’m thinking, This is forever! and I’m pouring champagne…
But then suddenly I’m in the hospital. And the first thing I say–no, scream–is “Where’s Larry!” So, Mom and Dolores tell me what happened:
We hit a tree. There was this truck, so we swerved and hit the tree and totaled the convertible–and almost totaled us! Larry, he comes to about half an hour later, and I’m not even in the car. I’m on the ground out front. They said I looked like a broken rag doll all covered in blood.
Larry didn’t even know if I was alive, but he picks me up and carries me two miles to a gas station. Then he sits down with me in his arms, and cries, “Help my Nancy!” over and over again.
Anyways, after Mom and Dolores told me what happened, I fell back asleep. But when I wake up, Larry’s there in a wheel chair, holding my hand, and he says, “Hiya, doll,” and there’s tears in his eyes. And then I seen his legs, and they’re both in casts. And that’s when I find out that he–my Larry–he carried me two miles on those broken legs!
Then I put my hand on his face and he kissed it, and I finally knew: My Larry’s not some big hero, he’s just a ordinary, vain, skinny guy that did the impossible…
Because he loved me.

That IS love. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Sue.
😍☺️
Lovely story, and a reminder that ordinary people do heroic things every day.
Heartwarming, touching, so sweet…such a picture of abiding love. Thank you, Mitch! 🥰
My pleasure, Dori.
Good one, Mitch. It seems teens always put themselves in harms way, some dodge it, some don’t.
Very true, Phil.
Very nice
Thank you, Vijay.
person say that mean in life fill much and cant find 1 to trust and love/
What a story! I loved it!
This should be made into a Hallmark movie. 🙂
I would say that Larry’s carrying of Nancy on two broken legs was a miracle.
He DID love her! WOW! What a beautiful story (and well-written—how neat, Mitch!). 🤍
Thank you, Karla. Yes, when my aunt told my wife and me about it both of our mouths fell open.
It’s my pleasure, Mitch. I understand that reaction!
Wow! Truly your hero.
What a lovely story. The totaling the car part was scary. I thought, surely Larry had died right then.
That is amazing. I am happy they both survived. Did they stay together long?
Yes, until they passed in their late 80s.
Great story . Wasn’t expecting that. My husband has done amazing things but this made me think of my son Jimmy bringing my daughter out of the house in her wheelchair when I accidentally left the burner on and the oil in a pan on the stove caught on fire. He was such a hero ! The girl who gets him is gonna be lucky!
Now that’s a son, PK!
That’s called LOVE! Beautiful Story, Mitch. I hope they lived happily ever after since that accident.
They had a long life together, Iman.
😍👌🏼
Gorgeous story, Mitch. 💕
Thank you, Sandy.
Lovely story, thank you ❤️
My pleasure.
That is the sweetest story. Powerful!

What a great story, if only more people loved like that.
Great story! God is always in control! ❤️
Love the love story! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Peggy.
Wow. I’ve heard of people in similar situations being able to do the “impossible,” like lifting a car off someone. This one is especially great because it demonstrates love so powerfully.
I know, Keith. Her story struck my wife and me that way too.
Beautiful story 🥹
