They are! They’re called cosplayers (costume + play). We all play-acted with makeshift costumes as kids (every bathroom towel has a second life as a cape). But unlike us boring people, cosplayers never stopped! In fact, many, like my daughter Beth (a.k.a. “Azayaka”), who has a degree in costuming, have elevated it to an art form. (I’ve included lots of pictures of Beth below, as well as a few of her and her husband Sergio on their honeymoon in Japan.) We all love animated characters, but some us actually become them!
