The Winter of Our Discontent

The Winter of Our DiscontentThe view from my office window

I Spend a Lot of Time…

…admiring the view from my window, while accomplishing very little. I did capture this lovely image, however–and a rather unlovely metaphor to go with it: I’ve spent too much time frozen in place. My calling, my purpose, has been in hibernation. I want to finish what I’ve been called to do in this life, not merely convince people I have. How about you? Well, then, let “the winter of our discontent” end now. It’s time to spring forward!

“Delusion detests focus and romance provides the veil.” ~Suzanne Finnamore

“So, make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that!” ~Galatians 6:4 (MSG)

“You can read a hundred books on wisdom and write a hundred books on wisdom, but unless you apply what you learned then its only words on a page. Life is not lived with intentions, but action.” ~Shannon Alder

“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered. The point is to discover them.” ~Galileo Galilei

“I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying.” ~Oscar Wilde

“If you reach for the stars, you just might land on a decently sized hill.” ~Stuart Hill

“Accomplish but do not boast, accomplish but without show, accomplish but without arrogance.” ~Lao Tzu

“It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” ~Harry S. Truman

“You measure the size of the accomplishment by the obstacles you have to overcome to reach your goals.” ~Booker T. Washington

  1. This really speaks to that quiet place where intention sits for too long without becoming action. I love the honesty in admitting feeling “frozen” and the courage it takes to say it out loud. Your reflection is a beautiful nudge to wake up, refocus, and move forward with purpose. “The biggest obstacle being ourselves” is such a powerful truth—and also an invitation. Spring truly feels like the right time to begin again 🌱

Definitely a message I needed for myself. Thanks, Mitch!

  3. Great quotes, Mitch. I planted some seeds yesterday–hardy ones because we’re talking Montana…. and one of my favorite bits of wisdom came to mind.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver.

I always enjoy your thoughtful posts, along with the humor. I really liked today’s random Oscar Wilde quote

  7. Good old Harry Truman! (The first president I ever saw in person.)

  8. Wow, love the view from your window and your photography! And I really like Oscar Wilde, Shannon Alder, Lao Tzu and Harry S. Truman! “It is amazing what we can accomplish when we get out of our own way!” – Unknown

  9. Reminds me of a Dave Roever quote: “Shoot for the stars. You might at least hit a streetlight.”😉

Another astute gathering of quotations. I’m drawn to put Galatians and Lao Tzu side by side. So how about we have glorious summers by us sons and daughters of York?

  14. Eileen Norman says:

Oh yes! The biggest obstacle is ourself!

  15. That is one awesome image-a fantastic reminder of our ice cold winter. My favorite nonbiblical quote is Booker T. Washington’s. Thanks, Mitch! 🙂

Awesome quotes also. Thanks, for sharing.

  18. Bronlima says:

Winter…. like life…… the birth of spring, the coming of age in summer. The autumn when the leaves and our hair falls, and the reckoning of old age and death in the winter. Living near the equator there are none such marked differences in seasons and no real evidence od Spring ot Autumn. It is perhaps the thing I most miss living here now. Funny, how reading and then contreplating, the mind take one to forgotten places. Ahhhhhhnn!

  19. Terry says:

All great quotes. The one by Truman resonates the most with me.

  20. Great Quotes … some my favorite “voices” which have encouraged me over the years…
Beautiful picture out your window by the way… winter is almost over… I’m in Marathon #4 training which is just 4 weeks away now… but I did get out to the golf course today for the first time in 3 months! – Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, Contentment I believe is “All you have to do is call”… another famous writer said it, but I’ll take the most prolific writer of the best selling book of all time… “come to me. all..” “none who come will I ever cast away”

  22. I feel like I’m in a similar spot myself. Frozen in time. The biggest obstacle is me. I will have to allow myself to thaw at some point.
