Thought for the Week
I used to consider
late autumn
with its leafless trees
and sullen skies
the ugly time
But then I grew up
and came to understand
its barren beauty
how it saw the loss and longing in me
and sent its moons
to make tunnels through the clouds
and its shivering breezes
to whisper, Yes, we know
but Christmas is coming

I’m reminded of Brother Lawrence looking at the leafless tree, and how, upon knowing that soon there would come a season of rebirth and renewal and that the tree would once again begin to flower with leaves and fruit; this caused him to ponder the Power and Providence of God. Then and there he began to see God in a completely different light.
His evidence surrounds us. But not all of us take the time to recognize it!
Thanks for the reminder!
And thanks for your reminder as well, Scott!
Beautiful poem <3
Thank you, Julie.
😀
Yes, Christmas and the rebirth of the beauties of nature.
Lovely poem. I actually like bare-branched trees. They look like lace against the backdrop of the sky.
I agree, Priscilla.
When the snow flies and leafless branches capture the snow, it’s overwhelmingly beautiful. 🙂
Or when they get coated with ice and then the sun shines on them – dazzling!
A favorite time of year, but you’ve enhanced it so winsomely.
Love this!
This is a beautiful post.
Trees always behave as though they still have their leaves. Elegant and secure. Not realizing someone blew away their clothes!
Beautiful poem! I see the leafless trees as resting and waiting until God’s spring arrives and it all begins again.
