The Sense of God

AArZPWQ

“The mind which thinks it knows Reality because it has made a diagram of reality, is merely the dupe of its own categories. The ‘sense of God’ is not a metaphor. Innumerable declarations prove it to be a consciousness as sharp as that which other men have, or think they have, of colour, heat, or light.” ~Evelyn Underhill

One of the most influential writers and philosophers of the 20th century, Evelyn Underhill reached the above conclusion after finishing the most exhaustive study ever done on the experience of history’s mystics, people like St. Francis, Jacob Boehme, St. Teresa, Blaise Pascal, and Catherine of Sienna.

“Therefore, we fix our eyes not on what can be seen, but on what cannot be seen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

~2 Corinthians 4:18

  1. Great quotes – love it!

  2. Todd R says:

Like RC Sproul used to say to atheists: “you know there’s a God, you just don’t like Him”

  3. Seyi Sandra says:

Denying God exists is like denying your own existence. Always enjoy reading your posts. 🙂

  4. pkadams says:

So much we don’t know. But we know God exists.

  5. Erika says:

Very good quotes. The more we think we understand the more we should question that thought.

  6. K.L. Hale says:

Everyone has their own reality. I’m so glad to know and believe in our real and omnipotent God! I only have to believe by faith! But so happy she did all the hard work to get to this conclusion ;-)! Beautiful share, Mitch! The verse is perfect! Amen, dear friend!

  7. I love that verse. It’s very helpful for when I’m feeling overwhelmed with too many worldly problems and busyness.

It’s odd to read this because her book arrived this week, which I’m looking forward to reading. I like the writings of Merton and Eckhart even though I’m not religious (more polytheistic you might say). Thanks for sharing Mitch. Kindest, Julian

  9. Amen!

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
    Hebrews 11:1

Abraham is proof of that. Look how God bless him because he believed!

  10. Amen, we walk by faith not by sight
