The Lives of Trees

Of all the flora upon the earth, none seem quite so human as trees. Endlessly varied, not only by species, but individually, they strive to find nourishment, to grow and produce offspring. They struggle to weather the storms of life, and yet when they sense their time has come, they surrender to the earth. They are persistent and steadfast, yet patient and peaceful. Perhaps that’s why they live so much longer than we do.

“Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.” ~Khalil Gibran

“Listen to the trees as they sway in the wind…and their roots give names to all things. Their language has been lost. But not the gestures.” ~Vera Nazarian

“An orange tree would rather die than produce lemons, whereas instead of dying the average person would rather be someone they are not.” ~Mokokoma Mokhonoana

“Blessed are those who do not walk in the ways of the wicked or sit in the seat of the mockers, but who instead delight in the law of the LORD and meditate upon it day and night. They are like trees planted by streams of water,  yielding their fruit in season, and their fruit does not wither.” ~Psalm 1:1-3

“Real love ought to be more like a tree and less like a flower.” ~Mya Robarts

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast

~Alfred Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see

A billboard lovely as a tree

Indeed, unless the billboards fall

I’ll never see a tree at all

~Ogden Nash

“The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.”

~John Muir

  1. I worried about our “family tree” during a terrible ice storm. It became a favorite story: https://joynealkidney.com/2020/01/03/blessings-of-an-ordinary-tree/

Oh my….the “mother” tree…it looks like the starting point for a fantastic novel. My brain’s on fire. Thanks for all of these, Mitch. 😉

  5. The variety of images of trees are overwhelmingly beautiful in so many different ways. They show that Khalil Gibran is right-trees are poems written on the sky. 🙂

  6. Some s peaceful and serene, some funny, some disturbing..,but ALL amazing!❤️❤️

“They are persistent and steadfast, yet patient and peaceful.”

Oh, I just had to laugh while reading this. Clearly, you’ve never tried to work around a neglected apple tree. You know those horror forest scenes, where the trees reach out to grab people as they go by? I swear, those are inspired by apple trees. I can hardly walk past our crab apples without getting caught in them. They’re the biggest reason I wear a hat all the time. I’d rather have my hat get yanked off, then try and untangle my hair from those vicious branches and twigs!!! 🤣

Magnificent way to start Friday afternoon. Instant relaxation looking through your slide show. I’ve been a tree person since I was a kid. I remember the trees in my childhood home, at my grandparents’ home, and in every place I’ve lived in since then. Thank you for putting those images together. Do you mind if I re-blog your post to tao-talk?

  16. summadaze13 says:

I enjoyed seeing all of the different trees you mentioned. You should put one from Redwood!

You recently liked on of my blog posts. THANK YOU! From that I checked out your blog & have enjoyed it so much … your meaningful messages & amazing pictures. I’m following you now.

This entry is delightful. We live in a developing area with only a few lots left to sell. I HATE it when a lot is cleared for building a new home & cringe every time we hear a tree fall.

Especially love the cherry trees, wisteria and rhododendron. Gorgeous. I like Kilmer’s tree poem. It has been put to music and I used to sing it, though I can’t remember all of the music now. Thanks for bringing all these trees into one place for my viewing pleasure.

  20. I have to agree about trees.

  21. radiostudy says:

Exquisite, unique, worlds to explore, wonder and laughter to share!

  22. dkzody says:

My admonition–take care of the trees. They provide so much for us and ask so little–water, space, some careful pruning. My heart breaks any time I see a tree being cut down.

  23. Ana Daksina says:

Trees are also very diligent about practicing supportive community. They have a chemically based early warning system for incoming threats, and share nutrients through their roots.

  24. Michele Lee says:

Thank you, Mitch! Spectacular photos and moving quotes/poems.

  25. These tree photos are amazing! In my neck of the woods, I really like the wind-bowed live oaks. They look so sculptural.

  26. Where would we be without trees? They gift us with so many necessary things, beauty, and pleasure too but most days, we just take them for granted.

  27. jilldennison says:

Wow, Mitch! What awesome pictures of trees! I cannot pick a favourite, for they are all beautiful or humorous, but the Picasso Tree 2 definitely made me laugh! And without trees … humans would perish from the earth. We would do well to remember that. Thanks for this cool post!

  28. ktz2 says:

I’ve seen wonderful photos of trees ‘trained’ into shapes over many years, such as chairs, arches, and random geometric shapes, just because.

  29. Trees are my sanctuaries!

  30. Ann Coleman says:

    Those are amazing!

  42. ourcrossings says:

Trees frame life, providing shade, oxygen, food, homes, heat and of course, building materials. Trees are universal, they house our swings and tree houses; they overlook our first kisses and marriage proposals.
