Source of quote unknown.
My country’s government is on the verge of shutting down — again (due, as always, to an impasse over spending). Meanwhile, following a long and well-loved (oh, wait, I meant “well-loathed”) tradition, politicians are vying to see who can win The Blame Game.
Some thoughts on the subject:
“The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.” ~G. K. Chesterton
“Discussion is an exchange of knowledge. An argument is an exchange of ignorance.” ~Robert Quillen
“Insults are the arguments employed by those who are in the wrong.” ~Jean-Jacques Rousseau
“Whenever we want to combat our enemies, first and foremost we must start by understanding them rather than exaggerating their motives.” ~Criss Jami
“No one can persuade another to change. Each of us guards a gate of change that can only be opened from the inside.” ~Marilyn Ferguson

At the end of the day, politicians win and everyone else loses. And sadly it has become Groundhog Day all over again.
I keep hoping that one morning I’ll wake up and things will be different. For now, I keep on trying to make this day I’m stuck in better than the day before. Maybe someday I’ll see February 3rd.
I hear you, brother.
Isn’t that the truth!
Mitch for President! Oh, wait, you carry too much wisdom. . .
;>)
Yeah, and he has that ethics thing, too. Always a deal-breaker.
Ah. Now, I’m dreading Groundhog Day, TOO! 😩 (More importantly, that last quote in its utter truth is an especially good reminder of what we all have to consider!)
Quillen’s and Rousseau’s quotes are very insightful-as is Ferguson’s. Thanks for sharing, Mitch. 🙂
Wise words.
Oh, what a sound, sensible, and sagacious selection of quotes!
And what a fine bit of alliteration that is, Manette!
Amen, brother. Amen. I would expound on Chesterton’s quite by adding my (totally unbiased, of course) belief that the reason Progressives are making mistakes is because they are actually trying to DO something.
Those quotes are spot on!!!
it really gets old, doesn’t it? thanks for the smiles )
My pleasure, Beth.
Quick! While they’re shut down, let’s build a great wall around D.C. lol
“Once upon a time there were two Generals. They served all their lives in some registry office or other; they had been born there, they had been reared there, had grown old there, and consequently they understood nothing whatever”
Mikhail Evgrafovitch Saltykoff (mid nineteenth century)
All good quotes, Mitch, but the one I really had to sit with is the Marilyn Ferguson quote– I think it’s from The Aquarian Conspiracy. I had not read her in such a long time and I had forgotten just how much wisdom is in her work. I know some people were put off by her titles–The Aquarian Conspiracy and Aquarius Now. They do sound kind of new-age-ish or like hippie philosophy, but she said some really insightful things, especially about fear.
I agree, Anonymous.

Aha, it’s you, Steve!
“Insults are the arguments employed by those who are in the wrong.”
~Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Which means the entire leadership of our nation, unfortunately. 🙁
You are in the winner’s circle with these quotes!
Thanks, Mary.
Your post reminds me Mitch of the infamous note left by the labour minister for his new replacement conservative government “there’s no money left”.
;>)
All I can say is, why doesn’t someone like you run for President? It would be a great improvement over the candidates we’re probably going to be stuck with!
