My Featured Blogger this week is Melissa Younger of Classic Reads, a site dedicated to introducing (or, in my case reintroducing) people to literary gems. I only recently discovered Melissa’s site, and am so glad I did!
The moment I read Melissa’s current post an old nightlight relit. I listened many times when I was young to a recording of Oscar Wilde’s sentimental children’s tale “The Selfish Giant,” but had long ago forgotten about it. How could I have? And now, once again, like the Giant, I have a melted heart. Is it corny? Yes. Is it wonderful? Yes. It’s also allegorical, so make sure to look beneath the story’s themes of kindness and redemption for their beautiful underlying roots.

I actually also blogged about this story towards the end of the last year. It is one of my favourites from childhood – and as an adult? I have only appreciated it more. I read it regularly to my children when they were younger too.
Melts my heart every time too. <3
Mitch,
Awesome story. I first read that in The Book of Virtues. Wonderful entry to the Gospel. It’s great to know how deep literary missionaries get and who shared their faith through classic writing.
Thanks,
Gary
I haven’t read this story in ages. It’s a good one. Thanks!
One of my favorites. No matter how many times I read it, the ending always brings me to tears.
Yep.
