My Featured Blogger this week is Dora A.K. of Dreams From a Pilgrim. “Like this site, I’m a work-in-progress,” Dora writes, “but by God’s grace, he’s still editing.” If that rings a bell, it might be because you’re human. Despite the specificity of her topics–in this case aging and ageless love–there’s an underlying universality in Dora’s writing. Read on and my guess is, whatever your age or experience, you’ll find yourself here.
Age hits me fast hard against the hurts
Breathless from stairs and unjovial nature
That taunts the tick-tocking time bomb
That is the heart, as if to say untenderly,
“Nothing heals but festers in decay:
New loss on old, new sorrows that choke,
What ifs that ache and fears that fray
Still taut nerves like wiry hairs of gray.”
I cannot pull my stockings up
I cannot pull my stockings up
I have no might
Not for this fight
So I give up, Lord, I give up.
My husband brings me flowers
Fresh pink, open like eager hearts,
Sun-lit thirsty travelers with no reproach
Against the heat of the day as if
The next moment won’t see a petal drop,
Then two, then a flurry till nothing remains
But desiccated stems and a faint unholy smell.
My knobby hands finger a peony glorious
As the clock chimes what is passing away
Caught in a tableau of the inevitable
When my husband’s hand reaches for mine
And my heart races with a newborn’s blush.
I don’t give up, Lord, I don’t give up
Let stockings rot and flowers too
Paper-thin my skin may be
Before I my Maker see – and yet –
Incorruptible the Love that sets me free
To glimpse eternity.
