“You know what they say…” I’ve heard all my life,
and I’ve often wondered just who “They” is,
to know so little and stir up such strife–
without them the world would be in such bliss.
Then it happened one day as I travelled up north
that I stumbled upon a town called Rumor.
It seems I’d gotten completely off course
and by now was lacking my usual humor.
So I stopped at a pub called the Whispering Inn
and there met a guileless server named Ev’ry.
Not Eve as in Adam and Eve and in sin,
but Ev as in ever and beverage and reverie.
And I learned as she gabbled and slid me a beer
that her whole name was something like–wait, let me think–
It sounded like “Ev’ry Thingyahear,”
but I couldn’t be sure as I drowned my drink.
Then she told me that every passerby
had something astonishing to reveal.
“And the things that I hear, mister, my, oh my,”
she said with such gullible, gleeful zeal,
“well, of course, I just have to communicate
such terribly, horribly meaningful truths!
Do you have a truth to reveal today?”
“Yes, I do,” I said, and concocted some news.
“They’ve discovered our planet is made out of soap–
scientists now are completely sure.”
Then she clapped and said that it filled her with hope
to know that the world was so perfectly pure.
As I left, the barkeeper beckoned me near
and whispered right there at the Whispering Inn,
“Hey, don’t believe Ev’ry Thingyahear,
man, find out first where your facts have been!”
That night on the ‘net I read, “Earth’s made of soap!”
And at once I could finally clearly see.
How could I ever have been such a dope?
I’d uncovered the barenaked truth:
“They” is me!

There is a lot of brilliance in this. Is this all your work. Enjoyable and true
Yes, I wrote this Seussical bit of poetry. Thank you, my Anonymous friend.
loved the last 2 lines! beautiful
Mike
Thank you, Mike.
Well said Mitch, a great parable for the modern age.
Thank you, Randy.
Love this poem, Mitch.
The last two lines are brilliant:
“I’d uncovered the barenaked truth:
“They” is me!”
Why, thank you, Chaya.
You are welcome.
Ok you made me laugh out loud! Good point!
Thanks, Janet!
Lol. 🙄 My grandmother used to always say, “Well, you know, they say …” and would get so annoyed with me when I would demand to know who “they” were!
;>)
HA! Good one, Mitch. My parents always used that term. I often wondered who “they” was, but never found out.
Thanks, Phil.
Fun-and clever-poems are the best! Thanks, Mitch. 🙂
My pleasure, Nancy.
Love it! The poem speaks to our inner nature for sure. Compels me to never say “they” again. I will need to name who I got information from. Lol. Thanks, Mitch.
;>) My pleasure, San.
Woaw! I love it!👏👏
Aw, thanks, Aline!
Incredible. Really Impressive
Thank you, AE.
Mitch – what a pro! A fantastic and witty read that answered many questions. Thank you. ❤️
My pleasure, Carolyn, and thank you.
Reminds me of the Pogo quote from Okeefenokee Swamp: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”😎
Very clever!
Thanks, Liz.
You’re welcome, Mitch.
Funny.
Terrific fun!
Brilliant! Well done, sir. That server must be closely related to another person we will be hearing a lot from very soon… primarily at White House briefings. First name is Many. Last name: PeopleAreSaying.
Thank you, my Anonymous friend.
I’ve also been wondering who “they” are. I often hear people say things like “they say…” “that’s how they are..”, “they do this (bad/good thing)…” and I’ve always wondered who “they” are. Thank you for telling us it was you all along. (….that was a joke).
Ohhhh, I get it. ;>)
Racconto fantastico ma con una parte reale, dov’è la verità?
Spesso è parte di noi, allora siamo noi 🐈⬛🌹
It’s not me! At least I don’t think it is, but that is only when I’m thinking.
;>)
I like to refer to “they” as the “Anonymous Whole”
Huh! 😂 What comes around…
Such fun, I love rhyming humorous poetry! Thanks once again Mitch for brightening our day!
My pleasure, and good to hear from you, Ramona!
Lol – one of life’s enduring mysteries – finally solved!! 😀
;>)
WELL DONE, Mitch! Love the clever rhymes, inventive ideas (i. e. the world is made of soap), and that most creative name, Ev’ry Thingyahear. A delight to read from beginning to end!
Aww, thank you, Nancy!
Funny and true!!! Very well done!
Thank you, Ann!
LOVED this poem! So clever and cheeky. You’ve got a new subscriber 🙂 Looking forward to reading more from you, sir.
Delighted to meet you, Jodi. Are you by any chance related to a Pastor Goforth? (Of course, if you are, it wouldn’t be by chance.)
I don’t think I am! I don’t think I’ve ever come across another Goforth outside of my immediate family, so that’s cool that you have!
I’m surprised! I’d never seen the name before either (I figured he might be your father), and now I’ve met two Goforths.

Well said, Mitch, and a great message for all of us, I mean “they.”
