Very few people are willing to work retail anymore. Especially during December when 110% of the entire year’s shopping is done (120% of which will be returned in January). It’s the time when an especially high percentage of shoppers (even online) forget things like: money, wish lists, their brains or–all too often–their hearts. Maybe it’s time to modify that old shopping motto: “Christmas spirit — Don’t leave home without it!”

Many kids will get new stuffs, toys, clothes etc…eat a nice meal, visit somewhere but that’ll be all. Usually.😁

A Clueless little Christmas is my favorite kind of Christmas 🎄
Quite the telling, holiday psych study, Mitch! As a 30 year retail veteran I can relate; vividly recall my own, mixed December emotions; i.e., loved helping shoppers select gifts for family/friends; loathed the rude, greedy giftees’ intent to morph returns into cold cash refunds; oft in the presence of the dismayed gifters. Whatever happened to graciously accepting a perfectly tasteful, useful present?

I worked in retail for 25+ years, so I can relate. Sadly, Christmas is the worst time to work in retail. People are in a hurry, and don’t care about anything or anybody else. I worked at a large retailer during the Black Friday sales. We were supposed to keep people from buying too many of certain items (quantities were limited). One lady grabbed more than the sign indicated. When I said something, she said she wanted to get them before anybody else did. At first management said to uphold the signs; then management said to let people go.
You saw the pressure cooker effect up close and personal (crowds, conflicting agendas). It reveals a lot about people, doesn’t it?
Yes, it does–customers and management. When I worked the Black Friday sales, it reminded me of barely controlled chaos. The store I worked at had local police and security people out. But you knew that, given the overwhelming number of customers and the mood they were in, things could go south quickly.
I always thought that employees should have mandatory paid time off after Christmas (I know-LOL hysterically).
In case anybody wonders why there are so many “Help Wanted” signs out there in retail/restaurant land–the above pictures and social media show why.
Ah yes, the reason why I don’t work retail and have never bothered with it. I’m the living embodiment of “if it felt good saying it, I probably shouldn’t have”. While patience is one of my few remaining virtues, I don’t have an unlimited supply. 😂 People who work in retail are genuinely a special breed. My hat’s off to them.
People love to treat people who work in retail or customer service like crap because they know they are easy targets and they can get away with it. Personally I don’t think companies have a right to tell their workers to put up with being treated like crap because they are making money.
I think that’s one reason why people are refusing to work in retail anymore. They are tired of being treated like crap, and feeling like they have to take it.
Some people say working in retail shouldn’t be hard. I figure those people have never worked in retail.
No, they most likely haven’t because it’s not easy.
