I just got a picture of a “DUH’ Stop Sign.
I can of laugh, but once when I was a child, maybe 1965? That’s exactly what happened to us, we went to a picnic, and a cow fall out off a cliff, luckily it landed on the hood, and not in the roof of the car, father was driving slowly, by the way some cars are born with an unlucky star, that one, was one of those, a Chrysler.
Two days out of the dealer a guy passing on the left made a line across on the side, it took a couple of weeks to be repaired and painted, a month after the cow! :
Father got rid of it after. -)

Well, in cattle country, specially in the old days, ranchers practiced free grazing, and cows being cows they go everywhere, and particularly like to the sides of the road, where pasture grows without too many high brush, and insects, since they like to cross the road, accidents are common, and on cliff areas, sometimes the ground near the edge gives up because the weight of the cow, and if you are unlucky to be there at the time, well…it happens!
Therefore the signs.
Odd, but, yeah, it makes sense–cow sense, anyway.
I’d totally take advantage of that Kodak moment! Does anyone else practice “thumbs up” driving over cattle grids in the road?

Just makes me wonder how often this happens – I guess often enough for the highway department to think a sign was needed.

I don’t know about falling cows, but I remember a couple years ago there was a widely circulated image of cows in New Zealand stranded by an earthquake.
Makes one wonder if there might not be some kamikaze cows out there somewhere.

Cows don’t have to intend anyone’s death in order to kill them. Any fifteen hundred pound animal can do a lot of damage, which is why some motorists, driving beside cliffs in rural country, have been amused by signs warning them about falling cows. It wasn’t so much of a joke when, in Switzerland, over the course of a few weeks, twenty-eight cows either fell or jumped over a cliff. A man in Brazil was killed by a cow that fell on his car. And, in Indiana, drivers along a highway were startled when a trailer on an overpass tipped over and rained cows on them. A bull survived the fall and ran amok on the highway, attacking a tow-truck driver.
The Summer of the Cow
Many people think that the book Jaws (which became an iconic movie) was based on the events that occurred in July of 1916. Over twelve days, five people along the coast of New Jersey were attacked by sharks. Four of them died. It was called “the summer of the shark.”
People would be embarrassed to call summer of 2009 “the summer of the cow,” but in eight weeks, in Britain alone, cows racked up the same number of casualties. (That was also the summer that cows started jumping off the cliff in Switzerland.)
What a strange, strange world we live in!

Fortunately, Mr. B did not suffer the fate of the poor cow. On the other hand, Mr. B was a restaurateur, so his diners may have enjoyed some particularly fresh beouf that evening.
After reading all the responses, I feel really bad for all the cows falling off cliffs all around the world! 🙁
