Comfort Is Infectious – Pass It On!

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we may comfort others who are in trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

~2 Corinthians 1:3-4

  1. Eileen Norman says:

Some of us are worriers and add to our actual problems all other possible ones. A friend said her mother’s response to useless worry was, “It’s not Pearl Harbor.” Mine is “The World won’t end.” Sometimes I add, “Not even if I wish it would.” Comforting is challenging, because we think we have to fix the problem, and usually we can’t. Listening, with our feelings, rather than logic, is what it takes to comfort others. Some of us have to learn we can’t take on others’ problems or pain. It doesn’t help them or us. Just the being present on a feeling level when they need someone to really HEAR their pain along with their words, can be grace for them. For what it’s worth, what I’ve learned the hard way in 88 years.

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; free me from my skin’ having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, perhaps decorated sighs from heartfelt breathing ‘YAhWEH!
knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away… Exhale’ Yahweh!
    Comfort me.

  15. Beautiful and Amen. Glory to God!

Thank you for this reminder, Mitch. I recently led two morning retreats, and after each one, there was this deep sense of comfort (even as troubles persist). God works through community, through our listening, caring, and sharing together. I am experiencing this more and more. And so, I thank you for bringing us together in this online community, too.
