Are We Nothing More Than Blades of Grass?

A personal paraphrase of Psalm 90

Father

You have always been our home

Before the mountains were thrust up

Or the earth itself was shaped

You were our God

Yet at your word we turn to dust

For time has no substance to you

Substance has no substance to you

And so you sweep us away

Like blades of grass

That push themselves up at daybreak

And are hacked down by dusk

O, Lord

You frighten us

Your anger is more than we can bear

We know we sin

We know that you know we sin

How could you not?

Just look at what we’ve done

Does it sicken you?

How could it not?

Does it make you want to start again?

To clear us away

Like so many forgotten cobwebs?

Is this all we are?

Things that exist

And then cease to exist?

No!

Teach us to see as you see, Lord

Fill our hearts with You

We are lost in the present

Like blades of grass

And this is all we have

Unless you stay with us

Stay, Lord!

And lead us beyond the dusk

Into a different morning

Erase our sorrow

And displace it with your joy

For too long we have forgotten

That you are our Father

And we are your children
