Welcome to Insectopia! Did you know there are ten quintillion bugs in “our” world? That’s 10,000,000,000,000,000,000–200 million for each one of us. And we’ve only discovered about 20% of them! When I was a kid, I found a big hairy spider in a gutter. So, naturally, I poked her with a stick. And then watched in horror as her “hair” ran in a thousand directions! She was a Wolf Spider, a species known for carrying their babies on their backs. And I thought I knew “all about” insects. Wrong! Insects are fascinating and infinitely varied. And they have much to teach us.

And don’t miss the quotes after the pictures.
“Insects are not drawn to candle flames, they are drawn to the light on the far side of the flame. They go into the flame and sizzle to nothingness because they’re so eager to get to the light on the other side.” ~Michael Cunningham (They’re a lot like us. ~MT)
“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect.” ~Franz Kafka
“No living thing is ugly in this world. Even a tarantula considers itself beautiful. And a dung beetle couple in love constantly proves that you still can be in love living on sh-t.” ~Munia Khan
“Go to the ant, O sluggard. Observe her ways and be wise.”
~Proverbs 6:6

Those who think everything is big in Texas hasn’t seen the bugs in Florida.
Amen! 😂
Thanks for these bug photos. Each of God’s creatures is beautiful. Hope your recovery is going well.
So far so good, Kathy. 🧡
I’ve been considering getting a termite for a pet, and naming him Clint.

hahah good one

Munia Kahn quote is going in my journal. You can love what you do and who you do it with—even if you live on 💩

It is so amazing the wondrous creatures God has created. Definitely praise worthy. Thanks for the reminder, Mitch!
My pleasure, Joanne.
Insects may be God’s creation with most providing some kind of function or usefulness – but what is the purpose of mosquitos that infect people with Malaria ? – a serious parasite disease born from the mosquito’s bite… Also the flies that lay eggs that become maggots under a person’s skin.
These and similar insects seem more like evil Devil’s work to me. Maybe there is no good without evil to measure against ? I suppose the same can be said of the plants and animals.. a vicious honey badger or the tree that can kill anyone who just touches it..
Amen! And what about bedbugs, the bane in many apartment buildings these days? They don’t seem to have any purpose other than tormenting the people they choose to live with. They only live indoors, so no other creature can feed on them. Their only living enemy is a cockroach. Not sure I’d like to hire a team of cockroaches to rid me of bedbugs. 🙂 But there are some amazing insects in God’s creation. As long as they are only in pictures. Wouldn’t want to meet up with some of them.
Nice
wish me happy birthday yesterday

Thank you, Kathryn!
I love bugs!!!
I had to go fast through some of those but I am glad I did. Loved the Pug. Bugs? Not so much.
Amazing photos!
Creepy and cool at the same time!
Phenomenal macro photography!. Now I better understand why people are repulsed by eating insects and certain arachnids. Thanks for the insight, Mitch. 🙂
Now that’s lotsa bugs! 🐝🪲🪳🐜🐞🪳🕷️🪲

Love this quote. It’s relevant to my next blog post about whether the modern world destroyed beauty.
Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure, Chanél.
Love this!
¡Hermosas y fascinantes fotos! Muchas gracias. Saludos.
¡Un placer, Marta!
