“Wisdom Begins in Wonder” ~Socrates

Thought for the Week

A child’s sense of wonder is a priceless commodity. Perhaps the only thing of equal value is the retention of that commodity into adulthood.

“Kids think with their brains cracked wide open. Becoming an adult, I’ve decided, is only a slow sewing shut.” ~Jodi Picoult

“The waitstaff at Yellowstone, even when they have finished their chores, don’t look up and marvel at the geyser going off. After all, they see it so often.” ~Philip Yancey

“We are perishing not for want of wonders, but for want of wonder.” ~G.K. Chesterton

“There is a voice of wonder and amazement inside all of us, but we grow to realize we can no longer hear it, and we live in silence. It isn’t that God stopped speaking; it is that our lives became louder.” ~Mike Yaconelli

“You cannot wait for an untroubled world to have an untroubled moment. The terrible phone call, the rainstorm, the sinister knock on the door—they will all come. In the meantime, it is best to grab what wonderful moments you find lying around.” ~Lemony Snicket

“Look at everything always as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time: Thus is your time on earth filled with glory.” ~Betty Smith

“The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.” ~Albert Einstein

“There’s magic in the world—and it’s waiting to be found.”

  5. rwfrohlich says:

That teaspoon of honey you just stirred into your tea represents the entire life’s work of twelve honeybees. Thanks for reminding us to consider all the wonders, big or small, that we encounter every day.

  6. Thanks for this Mitch. It’s really blessed me because God has been speaking to me about “5 minutes of wonder”. I haven’t fully understood yet what he’s telling me but I think that might be the point. Let’s see what follows. Thanks 😊

  7. Wonderful post, and I that picture is over the top adorable!

  8. numrhood says:

  9. My favorites are the Chesterton, Emerson, and Einstein quotes. Here’s to wonder!

  10. I especially love the Chesterton quote. Wonder feeds our souls. And The Wishing Map one is good too!

  11. gregoryjoel says:

My mentor and friend, Jim, used to tell me to put this sticker on my bathroom mirror – If you were absolutely positive this would be your last day on Earth, would you be happy with how you spent it?” I’m also told that people who live with a sense of awe live longer (per some study, but it makes sense to me…)

  12. Gr8 quotes and image to set them off.

Yes, wisdom begins in wonder.  If it’s the real deal, it ends in wonder too.

  13. ““Look at everything always as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.” That exercise alone could change a lot. 🙂

  14. Jennie says:

    Wonderful!

  15. Rosy Mathew says:

You are absolutely right. Wisdom does originate from curiosity. It was when I started really becoming interested in other places, people, I think I got more self-aware, improved my self-confidence, had more compassion, etc.

  16. Tomkariath says:

    This was really nice!
