Thought for the Week: Truth Is a Hard Path
Truth Is Not Comforting
It’s rocky and unpredictable, refusing to show us what we thought it would. Truth is a hard path to stay on: it takes us where it will, rather than where we want it to. Meanwhile, crowds gather on both sides, basking in the false light of being right right now, and vilifying those who refuse to join them. Why? Because, as Thomas Merton once said:
“We desire not the truth, but rather that our lie should be proved ‘right’ and our iniquity be vindicated as ‘just.’ This is what we have done to pervert our natural, instinctive appetite for truth. No wonder we hate. No wonder we are violent.”

Amen. Men are eager to offer treasure for the falsehoods of other men, but the truth? Although free, it seems too great a cost.
Very true, Scott.
I’ve never seen a wrongdoer walking the path to Truth. It is only the righteous who do that.
Lies may appear to be winning the battles, but Truth will win the war. The Truth will set us all free eventually. It takes courage for sure, but it is the only way that aligns with who God is and what The Bible teaches. Thanks for the reminder!
My privilege, Caroll.
Thank you for this sharing and reminder. Walking the harder road requires a kind of courage and surrender at the same time. And, also so very necessary.
Indeed, LaDonna.
The path to hell is an easy one, soft underfoot and a gentle slope. No warning signs. C.S. Lewis

Encountering truth is a little like a trip to the dentist’s office, I’ve found. It can hurt and make you squirm, but is vitally necessary for our well being. I am going to steal this Merton quote for my guest preaching gig this Sunday, if I may. It is PERFECT!

Oh Mitch, how did you know I was on this path of writing today. Our Creator don’t come but he sends, and your post today in my mailbox is surely a message from Him, used by you to be sent to me. Thank you. Lookout for my upcoming post Never Burn Your Bridges.
So glad this spoke to you, my Anonymous friend.
The truth really does set you free. And first we have to find our own truth. I’ve found it in poetry but people come to it from many different angles. Once you find it – it’s profound and freeing and you can truly build you life on a rock that doesn’t shift with the winds of change
So true and never in my lifetime have we been more in need of ultimate truth, unvarnished by narrative.
Amen to that, Pamela.
As we walk forward, the horizon always changes.
Truth isn’t always comfortable, but it’s always worth walking toward.
Amen. I don’t always like truth too, it convicts me too much.
Love this!
Thank you!
So good, and… so true!
