The Beauty of Light and Shadows

I’ve always been intrigued by the relationship between light and shadows. Together, they bring out the depth and dimensionality of objects. People too. We’re more real when seen in both light and shadows. “All masterpieces,” Billy Graham observed (and that includes human beings), “contain both light and shadow. A happy life is not one  filled with only sunshine, but one which uses both light and shadow to produce beauty.”

“Sometimes the moon is light and sometimes it’s in shadow, but you should always remember it’s the same moon.” ~Terry Pratchett

“The brightest flame casts the darkest shadow.” ~George R.R. Martin

“In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t.” ~Blaise Pascal

“Be transparent, so you no longer cast a shadow but instead let the light pass through you.” ~Kamand Kojouri

“Light and shadow are opposite sides of the same coin. We can illuminate our paths or darken our way. It is a matter of choice.” ~Maya Angelou

I especially love photos of sunbeams, streaming down through trees, or radiating from behind clouds. I imagine an angel has left the door open to heaven and God’s light is gleaming down upon us.

I like the photographs you shared, Mitch. The artist’s perspective of light and shadow tells many tales.
I wonder how light and shadow can give opposite meanings of their names, in particular contexts.

    The quotes are meaningful too.

It’s a post worth sharing. I see value in it.
    Thank you so much!😊

An incredible series of photos ~ a perfect reflection of how light and darkness can work together to create magic. You also include a quote from one of my favorites in Billy Graham: “… contain both light and shadow. A happy life is not one filled with only sunshine, but one which uses both light and shadow to produce beauty.” Perfect. I wish you a wonderful Easter weekend.

I remember the first time I became enthralled (and greatly disappointed) with my misunderstanding of light and shadow….I was a teenager getting my pictures from film developed, realizing I was clueless. I had picture proof.

  24. Oooo! I love this one – “In faith there is enough light for those who want to believe and enough shadows to blind those who don’t.” ~Blaise Pascal. As a photography, I have always been on the hunt for light and shadow. Maybe it’s because as a young child Psalm 23 stuck in my head – Yea, though I walk: through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil – and I wanted to walk bravely through the world and take in the beauty God gifted all of us. Thanks, Mitch!
