Am I the only one
whose little cat thinks
each bit of Christmas ribbon
is a strand of pasta?
Then, discovering it’s actually nasty
and terribly vile,
hurls it up
in tidy little piles
of cheery, multicolored
Christmas bile?
With a cack, cack, cack
our little cat puts it all back,
then goes and eats some more.
It’s her we adore,
but on days like these, I confess,
yes, I must admit,
I want to kill her
just a little bit,
or at least to scream,
“Why do you do that, cat?”
But I’ll never know,
so I’ll close this sweet refrain
with a feline greeting
so fluffily whiskerly bright,
“Happy Cat-mess to all
and to all a good night!”

Hilarious! “Cat-mess”
“I want to kill her just a little bit” – is that the wanting or the killing that is meant to be “just a little bit”?
😀
Both.
Of course.
I haven’t been able to bows on presents for years and I also gave up on breakable ornaments years ago.
I completely understand.
LOL! Cats are saint-makers, but how I miss our communal stalkings/naps/staring contests. 🙂
Understood, ribbon-noshing notwithstanding, we adore our little cat.
While I do like cats, and have had cats grace me with their presence over the years, this is one of the reasons why my family hasn’t chosen to open our home to any cats. The fact that my wife absolutely hates cats would be another. She’s perfectly content with our dog, who thinks she’s a people.
I love beasts of both persuasions myself.
The only reason we don’t presently have cats is that my wife detests them. She’s had them in the past, and didn’t find them all that enjoyable. There goes my plans for accidentally bringing home a bobcat kitten…
Mitch I love your poem. It made me chuckle. I didn’t know you were a poet as well as an accomplished writer, producer, etc.
Well, a sometimes-poet anyway. Thanks, Cheryl.
Too true, all of it. It’s better to have it out rather than have it in. But the cat, it seems, has to get it in in the first place. My cat used to swallow and then bring up things–food for people, for instance.
And this is why I’m a dog person!
Cuz dogs never make messes, right? ;>)
Truly though it’s not a laughing matter. It can knot up inside their intestines, killing them. Look at ribbon, string, yarn, tinsel, etc., as lethal.
Copy that!
So cute! Yip, no tinsel and very little ribbon under our tree! 🎄 Silly Cat! 🐱
One of the great mysteries of the world. Cats are such… well, such cats.
I see it in my cat’s eyes when we’re wrapping packages, “yummy ribbons.”
Somehow we have been lucky enough that neither of our two dogs have much of an interest in the presents under the tree. If there isn’t a smell, it isn’t worth the effort, apparently. Anyway… Merry Cat-Mess to you and yours!
My cat prefers tissue paper,
In tiny little bits strewn about,
Not one strip will ever escape her,
As she unfolds her wicked Christmas caper! 😉
;>) Merry Christi-mas!
Cute and funny post, Mitch! Merry Cat-mess to you, too!
Thank you, Kathy!
