Once a Teacher, Always a Teacher

Our students are about to go on winter break. And soon all the schools will be empty. But the teachers will still be thinking about their kids. Their spouses and friends will heckle, “Give it a rest!” But a true teacher never really gives it a rest. So, have a wonderful holiday, dear mentor, and thank you for not forgetting me. I’ll never forget you!

    I still have the many drawings, cards, and crafty things that students made for me tucked away in memory boxes, and I often still think of those students, wonder where they are and how their lives are going as adults. Nice post Mitch. Thank you.

    I remember a note a student wrote me at the urging of another teacher. He said, “Thank you for giving me books I can read.” He was a high school junior. Broke my heart. But so happy to have given him something he could take with him along his way.

    Mitch, When I taught, my wife would complain that I had a greater love for my students than my family. I let allowed her to be aware that all those whom I taught were just an extension or Our family. Today with family away, I still think about them today, as though I were still in the classroom.

    You can’t push kids you love out of your mind! Breaks are needed and welcomed, but getting back afterwards and seeing your students again is wonderful.

    I wish my kid was lucky and could find a devoted teacher…. Especially that he’s just started his journey at school…. and the teachers he is surrounded by now will probably influence his whole future academic life.

      We found with our kids that (even at a well-regarded “magnet” school) it was hit-and-miss. There were a few great teachers, a few duds, and lots of in-betweeners. But parents (and sometimes tutors) can usually address what a less-than-perfect teacher might miss.
