Music From My Movies
As I mentioned in the previous Music from My Movies posts, I’ve written songs for each of my feature films. For my “cult classic comedy” Notzilla (MovieWeb), I wrote three early 60s-style tunes to play under the closing credits. They’re presented as a typical day of AM radio in 1962, just as the giant monster Notzilla is becoming a national craze!
“Dino Surfin” is introduced by DJ Charlie “the Big Cheese” Cheeseman. It’s performed by Bobby Bleach (a character in the film) and his group Bobby and The Bleachboys, “Kentucky’s number one surf band!”
The lyrics tell how Bobby, a country bumpkin with a hip grandfather, find his groove by “dino surfing” Notzilla’s tail (an actual scene in the movie).
Well, I didn’t own no records, and I never seen a movie
My Grandpa said, I love you, son, but, dude, you sure ain’t groovy, uh-uh.
Stop drivin’ that ol’ tractor, boy, and parkin’ it at school.
It definitely factors into why you’re so uncool, uh-huh.
Ya gotta catch a fin and go dino surfin’ with me!
(Groovy, groovy, groovy, groovy—Wow! Notzilla!)
Your groove begins when you’re dino surfin’, you’ll see.
(Groovy, groovy, groovy, groovy—Pow! Notzilla!)
Once you ride a dino tail you’ll soon be hangin’ ten.
Every move’s so fine, oh boy, you’ll wonder where you’ve been all your life!
Once a dino moves he’s a combustible machine,
Especially if he’s had a lotta beer and ate some beans, uh-oh.
Ya gotta catch a fin and go dino surfin’ with me!
(Groovy, groovy, groovy, groovy—Wow! Notzilla!)
Your groove begins when you’re dino surfin’, you’ll see.
(Groovy, groovy, groovy, groovy—Pow! Notzilla!)
And now, without further ado, whatever the heck that means, here’s the #1 hit song recorded in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky in 1962!
This recording was arranged and produced by Steve Goers, the composer of my movie’s hilariously over-the-top instrumental score. Steve also sings the lead vocal!

Thanks for sharing and presenting. As a Kentuckian, I’m pleased!
Good! Did you enjoy the ref to Rabbit Hash, Christopher?
Yes, I did, Mitch! I know Rabbit Hash.
Aha, good! I wasn’t sure how well it was known beyond Northern KY.
Hi Mitch! Just wanted to say that I watched Promises to Keep and really enjoyed it. Now, I have to start binge watching your other masterpieces! Thanks for the faith and inspiration! I somehow got kicked off your follow list – but am back on now!
Delighted to hear that, Joanne. And glad you found your way back!
“Kentucky’s number one surf band!”

*Stares in groovy confusion*
Okay! Found and added to watchlist – the trailer looks hilarious!
Great. Enjoy, Felicia!
Wow! Way groovy, dude. COWABUNGA!
;>)
I watched and enjoyed Notzilla but thus sing is not playing for me. Thanks, though.
Sorry to hear you couldn’t play the song, Venus.
