If I Could Just Fix Everyone

a Kempis quote

“Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” ~Rumi

“With humility comes wisdom.”

~Proverbs 11:2

  1. Love all these quotes but especially the one by Emerson. I wish I could get back all the time I wasted trying to prove I was right and shelter myself from opposing viewpoints. Now my goal is to humbly receive truth from God and work on myself. And the result is that I see others as being in their process with God instead of needing my unsolicited input.

  3. Ha, ha, I love these quotes Mitch. Yes, yes, it’s everyone else with the problem. Okay, okay, maybe I really do need to look in the mirror first. Rats! It’s so much easier finding issue with everyone else, instead of trying to change me. Love Rumi’s quote. I deal with change a lot in the work environment and I always say that change starts with one person, getting one person to change their outlook and from there you can build it into bigger, and better things. Thanks for the post.

  4. Mark Twain is a hoot. His quote reminds me of his character creation, Tom Sawyer. But I think I need to follow Proverbs 11:2. Thanks for sharing the quotes, Mitch.

  5. Awesome, Mitch. Thanks. I was just reading Emerson’s Intro to “Leaves of Grass” and wanting to sit with his words. Why did it take me so long to truly appreciate the poets? At some point I told myself I didn’t understand. What a lie that was. Poetry is like life. Take it a step at a time. (Plus leave it to God to have me now writing poetry of my own.) 😅

  6. So true… so true. I especially appreciate the Emerson quote. It speaks eloquently to our present moment, don’t you think?

  7. Lesley says:

All great quotes, Mitch. Thank you. 🙂

  8. Eileen Norman says:

My judging others took a blow when I discovered we judge others most harshly for our own unacknowledged shadow self.

  9. #hood says:

  14. Whoa, what a prescient statement from Emerson: “Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.”

“Vulgar” is absolutely the right word.

  15. Manu says:

Love these quotes especially the one by Ralph Emerson.

  16. Pure Glory says:

It is so much easier to see the flaws in others than deal with the ones inside ourselves. Much food for thought!

  17. What wisdom, Mitch. I think I’ll post the Emerson quote on Facebook… Hope I don’t get cancelled … :/

  18. Jeff says:

I, too, love these quotes, especially the Emerson one. Disagreement and persecution are not even close to the same thing.

  19. Thotaramani says:

Beautiful lines( Quotes) that inspires everyone.

  20. I needed this right now. Tried and was disappointed someone isn’t remotely the way I’d like them to be, almost lost myself in an abusive relationship, proud to have got out early. Thanks for sharing.
