Forty-One Years Ago This Week

I love the way the sky is always changing, never exactly the same, sometimes subtly different, sometimes breathtakingly so. One night in particular, the moon was a shimmering crescent cradled by a perfectly formed diamond of zelkova branches. It was one of the loveliest, most magical works of art I’ve ever seen.

And then it struck me: “No one else on earth has ever seen this masterpiece, or ever will. It was made just now, just for me.” I tried to capture it with my phone, but digital light sensors can’t see magic. It was as if God were saying, “No, this is only for you.”

A short time later, as I reached to turn off my bedside lamp, I looked down at my wife’s beautiful, peaceful face, framed perfectly by soft folds of bedcovers. And I thought, “No one else on earth has ever seen this masterpiece, either. This too was made just for me.”

As of this week, Trudy and I have been married forty-one years. And I’m continually grateful for the ever-changing sky that is our marriage. No one else has ever lived the life we have together, and no one else ever will. It’s a constantly changing masterpiece…

Made just for us.
