Einstein’s Advice for 2021

Albert Einstein needs no introduction. Not only is he the veritable icon for the word “genius,” he’s also one of the most quoted (and misquoted) people on earth. So I was only half-surprised, when reviewing his quotes, how applicable they are to the just ended Year-Which-Shall-Not-Be-Named and the hopeful but iffy year ahead of us.

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity”

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

“You never fail until you stop trying.”

“I must be willing to give up what I am in order to become what I will be.”

“The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it.”

“What a sad era when it is easier to smash an atom than a prejudice.”

“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called ‘research,’ would it?”

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

“A clever person solves a problem. A wise person avoids it.”

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”

“Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy.”

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”

“The best way to cheer yourself is to cheer somebody else up.”

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

“I want to know God’s thoughts – the rest are mere details.”

    Wise, indeed. 🙂

  2. I like the one about a clever person solves a problem, but a wise person avoids it.

Reminds me of a quote by the actor Bill Murray about the proverb, “You can draw more flies with honey than vinegar.” Murray said, “But who wants to draw flies.”

Great stuff, Mitch. Albert Einstein is #1 on my list of “heroes.” He is my (first) answer to the question: “If you could spend an hour in conversation with one person, who would it be?”
