“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” ~Mother Teresa
“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” ~C. S. Lewis
“When suffering comes, we yearn for some sign from God, forgetting we have just had one.” ~Mignon McLaughlin
This season is the roughest for many. Try to remember: You are not alone in your pain. Ever. And suffering is never without a purpose. But if it seems to be, then assign it one, and chances are you will discover that that was its purpose all along.

I absolutely love his quote. Thank you! Karen 🙂
Glad to hear it, KD! I’m curious, though, which of the quotes you’re referring to.
Hello Mitch, I love Mother Teresa’s saying “I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.” ~Mother Teresa …..I think it is a wonderful way to begin the new year where all hurts are embraced with so much love that both individuals are healed emotionally and closer to God.
Ah, indeed. I couldn’t agree more, KD!

“when suffering comes we yearn for some sign from God, forgetting we have just had one”… This is so true and it reminds me of the scripture that reads Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. – 1 Peter 4:12-13
Love that quote. A great addition, Santha. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too!
Deep in December…it’s nice to remember the fire of September that made us mellow
Deep in December…our hearts should remember and follow.
Remembering September…as in any difficult time…September is still waiting for us.
Nice addendum!
One of my favorite songs! The Fantasticks is still an important Off-Broadway musical…at least it is important to me!
Oh, yes. The Fantasticks has had a big impact on my life.
It takes a little rain to make love grow
It’s the heartache and the pain that makes the real heart show
Where the sun always shines there’s a desert below
It takes a little rain to make love grow
Oak Ridge Boys – It Takes A Little Rain Lyrics
I love all the quotes, had a share of little bit of each! Thank you for the quotes! Happy New Year, Mitch!
You too, Miriam!
Thank you, Mitch!
This time of the year brings us to reflect on life. Happy New Year😊
It does indeed. HNY2U2, TInk!
Love the quote from M.M. the best, and your last paragraph is lovely. Thanks, Mitch. 🙂 Have a very wonderful new year! God bless.
You too, Debbie!
Concisely TRUE! You said it in 3 quotes… and said it well! LOVE it!!
Thank you, Dori. Blessings in the year to come!
Same to you and your lovely wife! 🎉

You chose lyrics from a song I learned when I was still a teenager and was falling in love with musicals. (I ended up in theater, by the way.) Thanks for this post. I had a really rotten Christmas evening because of some harsh words which were spoken to me from a loved one. The sting is still there; but it’s fading. I try to carefully consider any harsh words to see if there is truth to them. If the Holy Spirit convicts me through those words, I realize I need to change.
Your list of wisdom quotes made me think of one by C.H. Spurgeon: “Our Lord’s love letters often come to us in dark envelopes.” Indeed. Thanks again, Mitch, for helping me out.
So sorry to hear about those harsh words, Paula. Praying. Love the Spurgeon quote. Wishing you a truly Happy New Year, my friend!
And now I can hear Ed Ames singing this song in my head from the album my mother had which I used to play over and over and over and over… At least it’s a song I like! ; )
So true! So much pressure put on all of us (heightened by social media) to be “perfect examples of Christmas”. When just being true to one’s heart (happy or sad) is the only celebration necessary. Great post. I love the opportunity for reflection your blog inspires. Thanks Mitch!
Thank you, Andrea. And Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too!
