At the Crossroads of Power and Conscience

Thought for the Week

Politicians are, almost by definition, egocentric. This has nothing to do with party affiliation or agenda. Vision and strength of character are a rare combination — but not unheard of. The best we can hope for is that the leaders we choose will have equally strong consciences. That they will recognize their narcissistic bent, and surround themselves with counselors who tell them the truth. Especially when it’s a truth they don’t want to hear.

My country’s most important election arrives tomorrow. I pray that we will vote with our consciences for leaders of conscience. If we fail to, we will all pay the price. May we…

Think. Pray. And Vote.

“For there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.”
~Martin Luther King Jr.

“Man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but, when separated from law and justice is the worst of all, since armed injustice is the more dangerous.”
~Aristotle (Politics)

“The State recognizes no coinage but power: and it issues the coins itself.”
~Ursula K. Le Guin

“Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”
~Douglas Adams

“But knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.”
~Frederick Douglass

“For no thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.”
~L. Frank Baum

“The only person who can pull me down is myself, and I’m not going to let myself pull me down anymore.”
~C. JoyBell C.

The United States of America, as a political entity, is in my prayers. I pray, as you say, that conscience trumps party affiliation, personal or family tradition, and knowledge gleaned primarily from social media. As a Canadian, my interest in this election is selfish; what happens tomorrow there will have a huge impact here. Keep praying, Mitch!

  7. I hope people realize that in a democracy, every vote counts, so everyone eligible, should vote in the USA election Nov 5. I for one, would not want to skip using a very important hard-won freedom, the right to vote!

  8. Phil Strawn says:

My small town, Granbury Texas, population around 12K had a pray for America rally last night. The church was huge and packed. Many great speakers, pastors, preachers and priest, all came together to pray for our country to have strength and for the hand of God to lead our country into the right direction. The actress, Jennifer O’Neil, now 77 years old, flew in from Nashville to speak, and she was dynamic in so many ways. His vessel has been chosen, now we will find out who it will be tomorrow night, hopefully. God bless America and the Alamo.

  9. May God have mercy on us. Thanks, Mitch! God bless!

There is so much brilliance here in these quotations Mitch. But Aristotle knew. How did he know? “Man, when perfected, is the best of animals, but, when separated from law and justice is the worst of all, since armed injustice is the more dangerous.”
    ~Aristotle (Politics)

  17. Ann Coleman says:

Great quotes! My problem is, I don’t see a good leader in either of our presidential candidates. So it helps to remember that God is the one really in charge…..

Thanks for the eternal wisdom dispensed here, Mitch. As I am reading and responding now on November 7, two days after Election Day, I will need to read this AT LEAST four times a day since our country has apparently chosen the path of mass destruction. God help us all.
