Amazing Public Art

I’ve been pretty public about my love of public art. At its best, public art (large or small, authorized or un) is brilliantly or at least cleverly executed, and fits knowingly into its surroundings, often dramatically altering them. Here’s a gallery of some of my favorites!

All so startlingly beautiful. Even the shoes in what they make us either remember or learn. Those shoes drew my compassion and grief before I googled their meaning. It hurts me inside to have read the details, and whoever created the memorial captured the sorrow and agony, the unknown cruelty that must have occurred there once upon a time. But perhaps that phrase once upon a time is most inappropriate for the tale they tell is definitely not a fairy tale at all. There is no happily ever after resting with those shoes.
