A Quiet Spectacle

My wife and I visited Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Ohio, last weekend, the early 20th century Tudor Revival manor built for Gertrude and F.A. Sieberling, who co-founded Goodyear Tires. There was nobody named “Stan Hywet,” by the way; the title is Old English for Stone (Stan) Hewed (Hywet). At 65,500 square feet, it’s one of the largest houses ever built in America. But it doesn’t feel like a museum or a castle. It feels like a home, warm, inviting and lived in. Which is just what the Sieberlings wanted. A spectacle? Yes. But a quiet one.

Mitch impressive place and great pictures! My wife is from Akron and we have visited several times. A number of the Midwest cities have what we used to call old money with beautiful homes like Stan Hywet and very impressive art museums like in Cleveland. Enjoy your travels! Brad

If I lived in that house, I’d have to have “people”, one of whom would be head of “lost and found”. His/her job would be to find me when I was lost in there. Nice place.

  10. Thanks for the spectacular visual tour of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens. It is indeed a quiet spectacle-I live within an hour and have never heard of it.

Thank you for the tour, Mitch. A lovely home for sure! I can’t imagine living in 65,000 feet though. I guess you’d get in your quota of steps each day–without even trying!

So magnificent! Do they host weddings and other social events there? That can be so perfect for weddings portraits. I worked in event planning before, and my clients usually looked for historical venues like that! 🤩

Mitch, I have to go back on my PC to admire these pics even more. Wow! I had never known of this place. I can imagine seeing it in person~I’d be completely enthralled. I love the angles of the pics and how you “see” the beauty. From the library, study, gardens, through the leaves, and overall depth to detail. Exquisite!

  28. Very nice photos. Such a great place. It was spectacular at Christmas. From my youth, I remember the indoor, two-lane bowling alley they used to have as well as an indoor swimming pool.
