Life Is a Jam Sandwich

Life Is a Jam Sandwich

‘Twas soft below us and easy to chew

‘Twill be soft above us when we get through

But now we’re trapped in the middle, and wham!

We find ourselves suddenly stuck in the jam

Still, the art of sav’ring life’s sandwich, it seems

Is not to bite bits, but to chew the whole thing

“If you aren’t in over your head,

how do you know how tall you are?”

~T.S. Eliot

I love this, Mitch! SO MUCH wisdom “jammed” here!
Stuck in the jam—gets sticky! BUT–when you reach that soft spot again you can forget the sticky and keep savoring the sweet. I LOVE te T.S. Eliot quote, too! It’s always good to be at your “place”–I always smile and learn!! THANK YOU! ❤️

Love it! I’ll do my best to apply the wisdom of the jam sandwich today.

  3. I’ve never had a jam sandwich. Is it like a jelly donut?

  4. Chew the whole thing – yes! That’s a great illustration of a good attitude.

I hadn’t seen that Eliot quote before, but it reminds me of this that also comes from him: “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”

    Thanks for both!

Your metaphor turns life into a flavorful lesson,
where even the sticky jam teaches resilience,
and every bite reminds us that wholeness is the true taste of living.

Sandwhich way will the journey of life take us.

  11. Your poem captures the essence of being human.

And, yes, we are all caught between what was soft and what will be soft, just learning to savour the in-between.

Life – slips through your fingers, while you’re busy, doin’ all the other things. (John Lennon)
Sorry for my englisch. I read this wisdom in german – and tried to put it back in english.

I tell you many times I feel just like a jam sandwich. When I was little, my mom hated me doing something with my peanut butter and jam sandwich. I was about 8 years old and thought it was funny. I stuffed a whole half of the sandwich in my mouth and then clamped down, and jam would come oozing out of the sides of my mouth. So now when I look at what you wrote, I suppose one could say with that jam finding a way to ooze out there is always hope and to never let go of it. Things will get better; just think positively.
