(Note: I want to apologize for ignoring the wonderful bloggers whose sites I normally visit. We’re in the midst of 12+ hour pre-production days on my new feature film and I’m reduced to quick updates like this one before running off to the film set. I miss you!)
Why are MOWs (movies-of-the-week) on American television so flat and lifeless? Short answer: Because they’re filmed in just 18 days. Directors, actors, and crew step in last minute and, in order to finish on time, they paint everything by numbers:
“OK, lights are on, no major shadows. Wide shot. Close-up. Remember this is the moment you fall in love, people…and…action! Yay, camera was in focus, nobody blew a line. Great job, everyone. On to the next scene!”
I refuse to do that with my feature film (which starts shooting next week)! Only problem: We have just 18 days! So how do we keep from making a movie-of-the-week? Short answer: Pre-production! Today is the 3rd time we’ll be visiting locations to plan lighting, movement, shots, and concept. And this evening I’ll be rehearsing key scenes with our lead actors to make sure the dynamics and intensity are beginning to bubble up between them, so they don’t meet for the first time on the movie set: “Hello. Hello. Good to meet you. Action! I love you.”
Prayers appreciated!

Sounds like good careful planning. And don’t forget those onions for those emotional scenes. Seriously though, Mitch, I think it’s going to be a great shoot, even if you do only have 18 days. Supposedly, the film Rocky was shot in only 28 days—only 10 days more than you have— and it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. :O)
I pray for your success. Lifetime and Hallmark are my favorite channels 🙂
Well, you darn well better have a good excuse for not visiting my site!!! You’ve missed out on the “best of the best!” in my last two pieces, Little Buddy!!!! (I know you’ve been busy…just teasing. I’m so happy for you, Mitch! Enjoy this time. I can’t wait to see the finished product!!) 🙂
Oh, how I’m praying that each shot goes smoothly, disparate parts come together seamlessly, chemistry between characters quickly materializes, and the equipment behaves itself. Because God is on your production team, all things are possible!
i just prayed, Mitch (for divine inspiration, cooperative weather — sunlight, etc., favor where ever it’s needed, and an abundance of supernatural creativity….not to mention Energy for all involved). Will continue as ever God brings to mind. Thanks for the reminder here!
This is going to be Great!!
Thank you, Matilda!
Good luck on your success and no need to apologize. No one’s fault 🙂
Thanks, Maxwell!
