Saturday the 14th Half-Off Sale – All Evil Must Go!

“We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.” ~Oscar Wilde

“Evil is not something superhuman, it’s something less than human.” ~Agatha Christie

“We all have a Monster within; the difference is in degree, not in kind.” ~Douglas Preston

Of the three traditional enemies of our souls, “the world, the flesh, and the devil,” the one in the middle is the worst. Because the world and the devil can only control us via our fleshly impulses, like fear, greed, lust and pride.

“It is not enough for us to restrain from doing evil, we must also do good.” ~St. Jerome

This brought to mind a time when we were driving on the main street of a town a while back. The stores were all having sales of half off. We happened to see several young men with their pants below their belts and had to chuckle.

  9. When I was a “baby Christian” getting into having daily devotions, I had a book with pithy little sayings that were cheesy but easy for an 8th grader to understand. I still remember a few of them now, 55 years later. The Agatha Christie quote here reminded me of reading that “evil” is “live” spelled backwards – not what we were created for.

  12. I especially like St. Jerome’s quote. Obeying a list of “don’t’s” is not enough; we need to do good.
