Thought for the Week
Love hurts, love scars
Love wounds and marks
Any heart not tough or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud that holds a lot of rain
~Boudleaux Bryant
“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.” ~Neil Gaiman
“When you think somebody’s perfect, it’s just a crush. But when you hate them? Now, that might just be love.” ~Healing River
“We accept the love we think we deserve.” ~Stephen Chbosky
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” ~C.S. Lewis
“Love – real love – is patient and kind. It is not jealous or boastful, proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable. And it keeps no record of being wronged.” ~1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Too true… Love is awful, painful, wonderful and healing… often all at the same time. Eek, may we all be brave enough to love like Jesus who died because He loved us THAT much!

Anita and I were watching a sitcom on TV one night as the characters began planning a wedding for a couple of them. One of the men quoted much of 1 Corinthians 13 kind of wistfully as it described true love… after which they all more or less “hurled,” acted like, “Oh that is so old-fashioned and gross.”
We turned off the TV and never watched that show again. So sad that humor is to make fun of Christian love.

I’m surprised they would so directly mock the passage, C.A. I didn’t think our culture was quite ready to embrace the opposite “ideal”: “Love is impatient and selfish. It is jealous, boastful, proud, and rude. It demands its own way, is irritable, and keeps a record of being wronged.”

Actually, this was several year ago, and the specific quoting of Scripture in a sitcom at first surprised us, as the format seemed to suggest the character was presenting it as something to read at the upcoming wedding. It shocked us when the response was to mock it!!

As I read through these lines, it occurred to me that the love that sent our Savior to the cross is the greatest and most painful love of all.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. -John 3:16 KJV

If it don’t hurt, it ain’t love.
Eighty years of life, fifty-seven years of marriage; two children, three grandchildren, have taught me this is true.
But no hurt of mine can compare with the pain Jesus endured on my behalf. TBTG!

Cleverly profound, Jerry. Or is that profoundly clever?

After 50+ years of marriage I can tell you love needs a lot of care and attention if you want it to grow into the most delicious fruit you’ve ever tasted. But it’s all worth it. ❤️🩹

These thought-provoking quotes are a wonderful reminder that romantic love is a beautiful gift that requires nurturing. Loving others without being loved is another one.

Strong truth here, Mitch. I once met a young wife (We’ll call her Kate.) who purposely made no friends in her new community, knowing she’d be moving again in three years. At the end of that time, Kate attended a function with her husband and met some wonderful people. Later she confided in me her regret for shielding herself from friendships. Alfred Lord Tennyson was right. Love can be painful, but loneliness is worse.

Awesome and inspirational, love can be a dream come true of a nightmare depending on if you are with the right person God has chosen for you

Doesn’t the absence of love hurt more than love itself? Love is caring, it’s compassion, acceptance, respect. The absence of that is what hurts. Obsession is not love. Being selfish is not love. Feeling pity or sorry for someone, that’s not love. To be loved is to have someone care. When they don’t, that is what hurts. Love is great. It’s a gift.
