This reminds me of a teenager who came to me to ask for help with her family life; a dad that was living with another woman, a mother who attended church but hated her husband, sibling who just did not seem to get anything. As I advised her, she asked plaintively, “Why does it seem like ‘I’m’ the one who has to do everything!?”
As gently as I could, I told her, “You are the one who is asking.”

Poor kid! And yet, it seems, her path was clearer and held more hope than her mother’s or father’s at that point.
